The synthesis, structure, and magnetic properties of [Mn4O2(OAc)7(bipy)2](ClO4)·3H2O, bipy = 2,2′-bipyridine) are reported; this complex is the first tetranuclear oxide-bridged manganese(III) species and represents the best available model for the photosynthetic water oxidation centre.

The preparation and properties of two new mixed valence Mn complexes, Mn2(biphen)2(biphenH)(bpy)2(3) and Mn2O2Cl2(OAc)(bpy)2(2)(bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine, biphenH2= 2,2′-biphenol) are reported; complex (3) has a rare S= 9/2 ground state confirmed by magnetization studies.

The preparation and properties of the oxide-bridged tetranuclear complex [Mn4O2(OAc)6(bpy)2](1)(bpy = 2,2′-bipyridine) are reported; the complex has an average metal oxidation state of +2.5, corresponding to the putative S–1 oxidation state of the photosynthetic water oxidation centre.

(PPh4)2Na[Cr3(SCH2CH2O)6]·2EtOH has been obtained from the reaction of CrCl3(THF)3(THF = tetrahydrofuran) with HSCH2CH2OH–2NaOEt in EtOH; the anion is the first example of a linear chromium(III) trimer and contains antiferromagnetically-coupled metal centres with an S= 3/2 ground state.
