Ultrafast carrier dynamics in Cu(In,Ga)Se₂ films are investigated using femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. Samples prepared by direct sputtering and co-evaporation processes, which exhibited remarkably different crystalline structures and free carrier densities, were found to result in substantially different carrier relaxation and recombination mechanisms. For the sputtered CIGS films, electron-electron scattering and Auger recombination was observed, whereas for the co-evaporated CIGS films, bandgap renormalization accompanied by band filling effect and hot phonon relaxation was observed. The lifetime of defect-related recombination in the co-evaporated CIGS films is much longer than that in the direct-sputtered CIGS films, reflecting a better quality with higher energy conversion efficiency of the former.

Topological insulators (TIs) are interesting quantum matters that have a narrow bandgap for bulk and a Dirac-cone-like conducting surface state (SS). The recent discovered second Dirac surface state (SS) and bulk bands (BBs) located ~1.5 eV above the first SS are important for optical coupling in TIs. Here, we report on the time-domain measurements of THz radiation generated from TIs n-type Cu0.02Bi2Se3 and p-type Bi2Te3 single crystals by ultrafast optical pulse excitation. The observed polarity-reversal of the THz pulse originated from transient current is unusual, and cannot be reconciled with the photo-Dember effect. The second SS and BBs are found to be indispensable for the explanation of the unusual phenomenon. Thanks to the existence of the second SS and BBs, TIs manifest an effective wide band gap in THz generation. The present study demonstrates that time-domain THz spectroscopy provide rich information of the optical coupling and the electronic structure of TIs.

In this paper, the (001)-oriented hexagonal YMnO3 (h-YMO) thin films with various nominal strain states were deposited on MgO(100), MgO(111) and YSZ(111) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The ultrafast dynamics probed by wavelength-tunable femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy was performed to disclose the effects of the epitaxial strain on the electronic structure and associated magnetism. Analyses based on the measured transient-reflectivity-change (ΔR/R) curves revealed that while the magnitude of the on-site Mn d-d transition energy Edd(T) changes only slightly with the variation of the lattice constant ratio c/a, a marked shift in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Neel temperature TN was observed and the direction of shift was dependent on the type of strain. The possible mechanism for the observed strain effect on the AFM ordering is discussed.

We report superconductivity at an onset critical temperature below 3.1 K in topological insulator ∼200-nm-thick Bi2Te3 thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition. Using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy elemental mapping and Auger electron spectroscopy elemental depth profiling, we clearly identified bismuth (Bi) precipitation and Bi cluster signatures. Superconductivity in the Bi2Te3 films was attributed to the proximity effect of Bi clusters precipitated on the surface of the Bi2Te3 films.

We utilized a ultrafast optical pump mid-infrared probe to explore the dynamics of Dirac fermions near the Dirac point in topological insulator. The femtosecond snapshots of the relaxation process were revealed by the ultrafast optics.

Ultrafast dynamics of carriers and phonons in topological insulators CuxBi2Se3-y (x=0, 0.1, 0.125, y=0, 1) was studied using femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy. One damped oscillation was clearly observed in the transient reflectivity changes (ΔR/R), which is assigned to the coherent optical phonon (A1g 1). According to the red shift of A1g1 phonon frequency, the Cu atoms in CuxBi2Se3 crystals may predominantly intercalated between pair of the quintuple layers. Moreover, the carrier dynamics in the Dirac-cone surface state is significantly different from that in bulk state, which was investigated using optical pump mid-infrared (mid-IR) probe spectroscopy. The rising time and decay time of the negative component in ΔR/R, which is assigned to carrier relaxation in Dirac cone, is 1.62 ps and 20.5 ps, respectively.

Ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy of Cu(In, Ga)Se2 thin films was performed. We have found the non-radiative recombination dominated at room temperature. It could correlate to efficiency of Cu(In, Ga)Se2-based solar cells.
