Spin Hall mode in a trapped thermal Rashba gas

J. Armaitis; Julius Ruseckas; Htc Henk Stoof; R. A. Duine

We theoretically investigate a two-dimensional harmonically-trapped gas of identical atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and no interatomic interactions. In analogy with the spin Hall effect in uniform space, the gas exhibits a spin Hall mode. In particular, in response to a displacement of the center-of-mass of the system, spin-dipole moment oscillations occur. We determine the properties of these oscillations exactly, and find that their amplitude strongly depends on the spin-orbit coupling strength and the quantum statistics of the particles.

Spin-polarized deuterium : stabilization in magnetic traps

Jmva Vianney Koelman; Htc Henk Stoof; Bj Boudewijn Verhaar; J.T.M. Walraven

We report on a calculation of the spin-exchange two-body rate constants associated with the population dynamics of the hyperfine levels of atomic deuterium as a function of magnetic field in the Boltzmann zero temperature limit. We find that a gas of low field seeking deuterium atoms trapped in a static magnetic field minimum decays rapidly into an ultra stable gas of doubly spin-polarized deuterium.

Exact Determination of the bbb Incoming State for Recombination in H

de Lph Philip Goey; Htc Henk Stoof; Bj Boudewijn Verhaar; W Glöckle

We present the exact three-body wavefunction of the bbb incoming state, needed to determine the rate of recombination in H↓. Comparisons are made with the wave function of Kagan.

The role of final-state correlations in recombination of atomic hydrogen

Htc Henk Stoof; de Lph Philip Goey; Bj Boudewijn Verhaar; W Glöckle

We calculate the rate-constant for recombination in the bulk of a spin-polarized atomic hydrogen gas. We use an exact initial state and include the most essential collision aspects of the final state, except for rearrangement.
