An upgraded electron cyclotron emission imaging (ECEI) system consisting of new optics lenses with necessary electronics for receiving and processing signals for two dimension (2D) ECEI diagnostics was installed on EAST. Hyperboloid lens were adopted in the new system to optimize the spatial resolutions. The mixers array of sixteen elements measured the plasma electron cyclotron emission at eight frequencies simultaneously, and the profiles of the electron temperature and its fluctuation in an area of 20 cm (vertical) × 6 cm (horizontal) could then be analyzed. Evolution of sawtooth precursor and crash in EAST was observed.

Ions toroidal velocity, vt, in both the outermost 4 cm of the confined region and the scrap-off layer of Ohmic L-mode plasmas in EAST was measured using Mach probes. At about 1 cm inside the separatrix a local minimum in vt was observed, from which a cocurrent rotation increased both inwards and outwards. The radial width of the vt dip was 1 cm to 2 cm, and both the density and electron temperature profiles exhibited steep gradients at this dip position. It was observed in both divertor and limiter configurations. To find out its origin, the toroidal torques induced by neutral friction, neoclassical viscosity, collisional perpendicular shear viscosity, ion orbit loss and turbulent Reynolds stress were estimated using the measured parameters. Our results indicate that in this particular parameter regime the neutral friction was the dominant damping force. The calculated cocurrent toroidal torque by the neoclassical viscosity dominates over those from the collisional perpendicular shear viscosity, ion orbit loss and turbulent Reynolds stress. These results are potentially important for the understanding of boundary conditions for the intrinsic toroidal momentum in tokamak plasmas.

Two high performance silicon drift detectors (SDD) are installed at the equatorial port with z = 0 and z = -16.4 cm on HL-2A tokamak, respectively These SDDs combine with the new and non-conventional software pulse height analyser (SPHA) successfully developed more recently by us to measure the time evolution of soft x-rays spectra, the thermal and superthermal electron temperatures. The high-quality three-dimensional figure of time evolution for soft x-rays energy spectra is easily obtained by combination of a new SPHA and computer. Therefore, the measurement accuracies and the time resolutions of thermal and superthermal electron temperatures are also improved. The enhancement phenomenon of superthermal electron during electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) can be explained by the combination of superthermal electron avalanche theory and experimental parameters.

Ohmic Radio-Frequency Synergy Current Drive and Transformer Recharging Experiments in the HT-7 Tokamak

Chen Zhong-Yong; Wan Baonian; Shi Yuejiang; Hu Liqun; Xu Handong

Lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) experiments for investigating the interaction between lower hybrid (LH) wave and residual dc electric field were performed in extensive plasma parameter ranges in the HT-7 superconducting tokamak. The experimental results are well fitted to the Karney–Fisch theory on the efficiency of LH waves energy converted to poloidal magnetic field energy. The fraction of absorbed LH power is about 0.75 for the HT-7 machine, and the upshift of the LH-wave parallel refraction index during LHCD experiments have been derived by the optimizing fitting parameters. The LH wave is also used for the transformer recharging when the plasma current is maintained unchanged. The highest efficiency about 7% has been achieved in HT-7 machine.

Present Status of the EAST Diagnostics

Hu Liqun

A present status of the diagnostics in EAST is presented. As a very important step of the EAST project, tens of diagnostics were employed for operation and protection of the machine, plasma control and physics analysis to accommodate requirement for the study on plasma performance in EAST with upgraded radio frequency (RF) injection power up to 4 MW (both LHCD and ICRF) in the forthcoming years. Recently, new diagnostics are set up to provide several profiles of key plasma parameters for the further evaluation and better understanding of the plasma performance and physics in EAST, including a 25-channel Thomson scattering system for density and electron temperature, a metal bolometry for radiated power, an X-ray crystal spectroscopy for both ion and electron temperatures and plasma rotation velocity, etc. It is expected that these diagnostics would play an important role in data analysis and interpretation combined with integrated modeling.

The power supply system of ion source for the Neutral Beam Injector (NBI) in the HT-7 superconducting tokamak is based on a single injector with one ion source that can deliver 700 kW of neutral beam power. Experiments and a discharges test on the ion source were successfully performed. In this paper, the circuit structures and features of every power supply are described and the results of the discharges test are presented.

Present status of the diagnostics for electron cyclotron emission measurements on both HT-7 and EAST is reported. A 16-channel heterodyne radiometer system and a 20-channel grating polychromator, have been installed on HT-7 and EAST. A 32-channel heterodyne radiometer system, with a wider frequency coverage and better spatial resolution, is being built. In order to provide a reliable electron temperature profile, an in-situ absolute calibration system is currently being built. With the ECE measurements, study on the electron heat transport and the anomalous Doppler resonance is conducted.

Measurement of Neutron Flux at the Initial Phase of Discharge in EAST

Zhong Guoqiang; Hu Liqun; Li Xiao-Ling; Lin Shiyao; Zhou Ruijie

Neutron emission in EAST was investigated by a time-resolved monitor system which consists of four 3He proportional counters and a 235U fission chamber. The D-D neutron flux increased approximately an order of magnitude during the 27 MHz ion-cyclotron radio frequency (ICRF) heating, demonstrating that the ICRF wave heated the plasma effectively. In addition in lower hybrid wave (LHW) experiment with higher plasma parameters D-D neutrons were also detected. However, masses of photoneutrons were generated in Ohmic discharges with low plasma density. Effect of plasma density on the production of photoneutrons was studied, and it is found that LHW can suppress the generation of the runaway electrons and reduce the share of the photoneutrons effectively.

Two soft X-ray pulse height analysis (PHA) systems, based on silicon drift detector (SDD), were established on the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) to measure spectrum of soft X-ray emission. In this paper, the soft X-ray PHA systems on EAST are introduced and some experimental results of electron temperature in EAST obtained from the soft X-ray PHA diagnostic are presented.

Hard X-Ray PHA System on the HT-7 Tokamak

Lin Shiyao; Shi Yuejiang; Wan Baonian; Chen Zhong-Yong; Hu Liqun

A new hard X-ray pulse-height analysis (PHA) system has been established on HT-7 tokamak for long pulse steady-state operation. This PHA system consists of hard X-ray diagnostics and multi-channel analysers (MCA). The hard X-ray diagnostics consists of a vertical X-ray detector array (CdTe) and a horizontal X-ray detector array (NaI). The hard X-ray diagnostics can provide the profile of power deposition and the distribution function of fast electron during radio frequency (RF) current drive. The MCA system is the electronic part of the PHA system, which has been modularized and linked to PC through LAN. Each module of MCA can connect with 8 X-ray detectors. The embedded Ethernet adapter in the MCA module makes the data communication between PC and MCA very convenient. A computer can control several modules of MCA through certain software and a hub. The RAM in MCA can store 1024 or more spectra for each detector and therefore the PHA system can be applied in the long pulse discharge of several minutes.
