The switched reluctance motor SRM is a promising direct drive unit for robot arms, however high performance control of the SRM faces the challenge of real-time constraint. A dual-core embedded control system, embracing a DSP Digital Signal Processor and an FPGA Field Programmable Gate Array processor, is designed to reduce the computational burden. The hardware system is composed of three modules, i.e. the core processors module, the peripheral module and the drive module. The software system is correspondingly designed to match the hardware infrastructure to enhance the real-time performance. Timing analysis and task optimization show that the dual-core system is eligible for critical real-time drive applications.
