This paper reports the main results obtained in the framework of the COST239 project on the implementation of transparent optical network schemes to connect main European cities. The investigation on transmission limitations has shown that transmission systems, for which 1662:5 Gbit/s WDM systems are used due to traf®c reasons, have a maximum range shorter than 1000 km. This condition does not allow a completely transparent network. Two solutions, the partitioned and the gridconnected network architecture, are proposed, described, and compared in the paper.

Sealed Cloud - A Novel Approach to Safeguard against Insider Attacks

Hubert Jäger; Arnold Monitzer; Ralf Rieken; Edmund Ernst; Khiem Dau Nguyen

Security and privacy have turned out to be major challenges of the further Internet evolution in general and cloud computing, in particular. This paper proposes a novel approach as to how to safeguard against previously unimpeded insider attacks, referred to as Sealed Cloud. A canonical set of technical measures is described, which, in conjunction, sufficiently complicate and thus economically prevent insider access to unencrypted data. This paper shows the advantages versus end-to-end encryption relative to communication services. Another application of the Sealed Cloud, referred to as Sealed Freeze, provides a seminal solution to privacy issues pertaining to data retention.

Doubtless Identification and Privacy Preserving of User in Cloud Systems

Antonio González Robles; Norbert Pohlmann; Christoph Engling; Hubert Jäger; Edmund Ernst

Present paper addresses the common challenge of compliant verification of electronic identities (eID) with legal certainty. The latter is of particular importance for banks, financial institutions, and public authorities. To ensure confidentiality, provider-proof cloud systems are a technical solution. However, they must also ensure privacy for communication from system to system.
