Highly Enantioselective Copper-Catalyzed Electrophilic Trifluoromethylation of β-Ketoesters

Qing-Hai Deng; Hubert Wadepohl; Lutz H. Gade

Enantioselective Cu-catalyzed trifluoromethylation of β-ketoesters using commercially available trifluoromethylating reagents is reported. A number of α-CF(3) β-ketoesters are obtained with up to 99% ee. The trifluoromethylated products were then transformed diastereoselectively to α-CF(3) β-hydroxyesters with two adjacent quaternary stereocenters via a Grignard reaction.

Enantioselective Iron-Catalyzed Azidation of β-Keto Esters and Oxindoles

Qing-Hai Deng; Tim Bleith; Hubert Wadepohl; Lutz H. Gade

The first example of Fe-catalyzed enantioselective azidations of β-keto esters and oxindoles using a readily available N3-transfer reagent is reported. A number of α-azido-β-keto esters were obtained with up to 93% ee, and this methodology also generates 3-substitued 3-azidooxindoles with high enantioselectivities (up to 94%).

Qing-Hai Deng; Christoph A. Rettenmeier; Hubert Wadepohl; Lutz H. Gade

The enantioselective trifluoromethylthiolation of β-ketoesters using chiral copper-boxmi complexes as catalysts is reported. A number of α-SCF3-substituted β-ketoesters have been obtained with up to >99% enantiomeric excess (ee), and the trifluoromethylthiolated products were then transformed diastereoselectively to α-SCF3-β-hydroxyesters with two adjacent quaternary stereocenters.

The Synthesis of a New Class of Chiral Pincer Ligands and Their Applications in Enantioselective Catalytic Fluorinations and the Nozaki–Hiyama–Kishi Reaction

Qing-Hai Deng; Hubert Wadepohl; Lutz H. Gade

A new class of chiral tridentate N-donor pincer ligands, bis(oxazolinylmethylidene)isoindolines (boxmi), was synthesized in three steps starting from readily available phthalimides. Their reaction with ethyl (triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetate by means of a key-step Wittig reaction gave the ligand backbones, which were condensed with amino alcohols and then cyclized to obtain the corresponding ligands. These ligands were subsequently applied in the nickel(II)-catalyzed enantioselective fluorination of oxindoles and β-ketoesters to obtain the corresponding products with enantioselectivities of up to >99% ee and high yields. Application of the chiral pincer ligands in the chromium-catalyzed enantioselective Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi reaction of aldehydes gave the corresponding alcohols with an optimal enantioselectivity of 93%.

The structural chemistry and reactivity of 1,3,8,10-tetraazaperopyrene (TAPP) on Cu(111) under ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) conditions has been studied by a combination of experimental techniques (scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, XPS) and DFT calculations. Depending on the deposition conditions, TAPP forms three main assemblies, which result from initial submonolayer coverages based on different intermolecular interactions: a close-packed assembly similar to a projection of the bulk structure of TAPP, in which the molecules interact mainly through van der Waals (vDW) forces and weak hydrogen bonds; a porous copper surface coordination network; and covalently linked molecular chains. The Cu substrate is of crucial importance in determining the structures of the aggregates and available reaction channels on the surface, both in the formation of the porous network for which it provides the Cu atoms for surface metal coordination and in the covalent coupling of the TAPP molecules at elevated temperature. Apart from their role in the kinetics of surface transformations, the available metal adatoms may also profoundly influence the thermodynamics of transformations by coordination to the reaction product, as shown in this work for the case of the Cu-decorated covalent poly(TAPP-Cu) chains.

The Mechanism of the (Bispidine)copper(II)-Catalyzed Aziridination of Styrene: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

Peter Comba; Carolin Lang; Carlos Lopez de Laorden; Amsaveni Muruganantham; Gopalan Rajaraman; Hubert Wadepohl; Marta Zajaczkowski

Experimental and DFT-based computational results on the aziridination mechanism and the catalytic activity of (bispidine)copper(I) and -copper(II) complexes are reported and discussed (bispidine=tetra- or pentadentate 3,7-diazabicyclo[3.1.1]nonane derivative with two or three aromatic N donors in addition to the two tertiary amines). There is a correlation between the redox potential of the copper(II/I) couple and the activity of the catalyst. The most active catalyst studied, which has the most positive redox potential among all (bispidine)copper(II) complexes, performs 180 turnovers in 30 min. A detailed hybrid density functional theory (DFT) study provides insight into the structure, spin state, and stability of reactive intermediates and transition states, the oxidation state of the copper center, and the denticity of the nitrene source. Among the possible pathways for the formation of the aziridine product, the stepwise formation of the two N-C bonds is shown to be preferred, which also follows from experimental results. Although the triplet state of the catalytically active copper nitrene is lowest in energy, the two possible spin states of the radical intermediate are practically degenerate, and there is a spin crossover at this stage because the triplet energy barrier to the singlet product is exceedingly high.

Iron achieves noble metal reactivity and selectivity: highly reactive and enantioselective iron complexes as catalysts in the hydrosilylation of ketones.

Tim Bleith; Hubert Wadepohl; Lutz H. Gade

Chiral iron alkyl and iron alkoxide complexes bearing boxmi pincers as stereodirecting ligands have been employed as catalysts for enantioselective hydrosilylation reactions with unprecedented activity and selectivity (TOF = 240 h(-1) at -40 °C, ee up to 99% for alkyl aryl ketones), which match the performance of previously established noble-metal-based catalysts. This shows the potential of earth-abundant metals such as iron for replacing platinum--metals without any drawbacks for the reaction design.

The reaction of the hexacyanometalates K3[M(1)(CN)6] (M(1) = Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(III)) with the bispidine complexes [M(2)(L(1))(X)](n+) and [M(2)(L(2))(X)](n+) (M(2) = Mn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II); L(1) = 3-methyl-9-oxo-2,4-di-(2-pyridyl)-7-(2-pyridylmethyl)-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-1,5-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester; L(2) = 3-methyl-9-oxo-7-(2-pyridylmethyl)-2,4-di-(2-quinolyl)-3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-1,5-dicarboxylic acid dimethyl ester; X = anion or solvent) in water-methanol mixtures affords trinuclear complexes with cis- or trans-arrangement of the bispidine-capped divalent metal centers around the hexacyanometalate. X-ray structural analyses of five members of this family of complexes (cis-Fe[CuL(2)]2, trans-Fe[CuL(1)]2, cis-Co[CuL(2)]2, trans-Cr[MnL(1)]2, trans-Fe[MnL(1)]2) and the magnetic data of the entire series are reported. The magnetic data of the cyanide bridged, ferromagnetically coupled cis- and trans-Fe[ML]2 compounds (M = Ni(II), Cu(II)) with S = 3/2 (Cu(II)) and S = 5/2 (Ni(II)) ground states are analyzed with an extended Heisenberg Hamiltonian which accounts for anisotropy and zero-field splitting, and the data of the Cu(II) systems, for which structures are available, are thoroughly analyzed in terms of an orbital-dependent Heisenberg Hamiltonian, in which both spin-orbit coupling and low-symmetry ligand fields are taken into account. It is shown that the absence of single-molecule magnetic behavior in all spin clusters reported here is due to a large angular distortion of the [Fe(CN)6](3-) center and the concomitant quenching of orbital angular momentum of the Fe(III) ((2)T2g) ground state.

Coronene-Containing N-Heteroarenes: 13 Rings in a Row

Alexander H. Endres; Manuel Schaffroth; Fabian Paulus; Hilmar Reiss; Hubert Wadepohl; Frank Rominger; Roland Krämer; Uwe H. F. Bunz

We describe the modular synthesis of three novel large N-heteroarenes, containing 9, 11, and 13 annulated rings. This modular system features fused azaacene units to a coronene nucleus. We evaluate the optical and electronic properties and the solid-state packing of the targets. The electronic properties of the 13-ring N-heteroarene allow the fabrication of a proof-of-concept thin-film transistor. Electron mobilities up to 8 × 10(-4) cm/(V s) were obtained for polycrystalline films.

Catecholase activity of dicopper(II)-bispidine complexes: stabilities and structures of intermediates, kinetics and reaction mechanism

Karin Born; Peter Comba; André Daubinet; Alexander Fuchs; Hubert Wadepohl

A mechanism for the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (dtbc) with dioxygen to the corresponding quinone (dtbq), catalyzed by bispidine-dicopper complexes (bispidines are various mono- and dinucleating derivatives of 3,7-diazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane with bis-tertiary-amine–bispyridyl or bis-tertiary-amine–trispyridyl donor sets), is proposed on the basis of (1) the stoichiometry of the reaction as well as the stabilities and structures [X-ray, density functional theory (B3LYP, TZV)] of the bispidine-dicopper(II)–3,4,5,6-tetrachlorcatechol intermediates, (2) formation kinetics and structures (molecular mechanics, MOMEC) of the end-on peroxo–dicopper(II) complexes and (3) kinetics of the stoichiometric (anaerobic) and catalytic (aerobic) copper-complex-assisted oxidation of dtbc. This involves (1) the oxidation of the dicopper(I) complexes with dioxygen to the corresponding end-on peroxo–dicopper(II) complexes, (2) coordination of dtbc as a bridging ligand upon liberation of H2O2 and (3) intramolecular electron transfer to produce dtbq, which is liberated, and the dicopper(I) catalyst. Although the bispidine complexes have reactivities comparable to those of recently published catalysts with macrocyclic ligands, which seem to reproduce the enzyme-catalyzed process in various reaction sequences, a strikingly different oxidation mechanism is derived from the bispidine–dicopper-catalyzed reaction.
