Pulmonic Regurgitation Following Staphylococcal Endocarditis An Intracardiac Phonocardiographic Study

Hugh S. Levin; Vincent Runco; Charles F. Wooley; Joseph M. Ryan

Isolated pulmonic regurgitation was found in a 30-year-old man 5 years after an episode of bacteriologically proved and successfully treated staphylococcal endocarditis. Intracardiac phonocardiography was useful in confirming the diagnosis, and simultaneous intracardiac pressure and sound recording afforded a plausible explanation for the unusual murmur of organic pulmonic insufficiency.

Intracardiac sound and pressure events in man

Charles F. Wooley; Hugh S. Levin; Richard F. Leighton; Richard S. Goodwin; Joseph M. Ryan; George F. Rieser

Abstract Described herein are intracardiac sound and pressure events recorded in 105 patients with organic heart disease by means of an intracardiac micromanometer at right heart catheterization. Sound-pressure relationships are defined in patients with selected congenital and acquired cardiac diseases. Pressure pulse recordings of high quality with simultaneous isolation and localization of specific sound events provide investigative and diagnostic information. Renewal of interest in the origin, transmission and clinical correlation of the classic auscultatory events are accompaniments of intracardiac sound-pressure studies.

Lymph node compression of the pulmonary artery causing a continuous murmur.

Hugh S. Levin; Richard W. Booth

Abstract A patient with lymph node compression of the left pulmonary artery is presented in whom a continuous murmur suggested the diagnosis of patent ductus arteriosus. The numerous causes of continuous murmurs are tabulated and the mechanism of the production of continuous murmurs by vascular narrowing is reviewed.

Petechiae Following Angiography: Evidence for Increased Capillary Permeability

Hugh S. Levin; Paul H. McDermott; Vincent Runco; Anthony J. Carnazzo; Richard W. Booth

Although recent modifications in the chemical structure of radiodiagnostic contrast media have led to a decrease in the incidence of potentially fatal complications such as angioneurotic edema and anaphylactic shock, untoward reactions of varying severity continue to follow angiography (1). These range from serious central nervous system damage to more common minor side-effects including nausea, vomiting, headache, flushing, itching, paresthesias, and urticaria. The development of petechiae as a manifestation of contrast medium toxicity is rarely referred to in the medical literature (2), although the occurrence of hemorrhagic phenomena in patients receiving other iodine-containing compounds is well known (3–10). It is the purpose of the present communication to describe this complication in three patients examined angiographically in our department over a twelve-month period. Clinical and laboratory evidence accumulated from the three cases suggests that the petechiae were not a manifestation of a clotti...
