A system is being designed, using solar energy in combination with Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES), that will conserve a major part of the oil and electricity used for heating or cooling the Cukurova University, Balcali Hospital in Adana, Turkey. The general objective of the system is to provide heating and cooling to the hospital by storing solar heat underground in summer and cold in winter. As the main source of cold energy, ventilation air at the hospital and surface water from the nearby Seyhan Lake will be used.

Molecular Mass (MM) distributions in humic acids from peat and two lignites have been investigated by high performance size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) after methylation and found to be in the range approximately 300 to more than 5000, with number average NM(Mn) near 800. Values of Mn determined by SEC were in good agreement with those from vapour pressure osmotery. High field13C NMR spectra of the methylated humic acids are extremely well resolved, and indicate that the samples are significantly different, despite their similar elemental compositions and MM distributions.

Solid waste management in the Adana-Mersin region of Turkey is the subject-matter of this paper. Discussion begins with an introduction to the solid waste management problems in the region and proposals for their alleviation. It then moves on to the modalities proposed in the recent Development Plans of Turkey for the alleviation of those problems. the Seventh Five-year Development Plan in particular. This Plan recommends pro-active and timely measures to be taken to prevent pollution as opposed to dealing with pollution already caused as in the earlier Plans. The place of solid waste management in the National Enviroruuental Action Plan (NEAP) of Turkey is then discussed. Finally, a study on the development of a solid waste management plan for the Adana-Mersin region is discussed with reference to its various elements such as site selection, appropri ate technology, pilot projects, etc.
