Volatile constituents of two endemic Centaurea species from Turkey: C. pseudoscabiosa subsp. pseudoscabiosa and C. hadimensis

The essential oils obtained from two endemic Centaurea species (Compositae) from Turkey, C. pseudoscabiosa subsp. pseudoscabiosa Boiss. et Buhse (Sect. Acrocentron) and C. hadimensis Wagenitz, K. Ertugrul et H. Dural (Sect. Psephelloideae), have been studied. Germacrene D was the major component (36.0 and 44.3%, respectively), followed by β-caryophyllene, bicyclogermacrene and β-sesquiphellandrene.

ESSENTIAL OIL COMPOSITION OF TWO ENDEMIC CENTAUREA SPECIES FROM TURKEY CENTAUREA MUCRONIFERA AND CENTAUREA CHRYSANTHA COLLECTED IN THE SAME HABITAT

The essential oils of two endemic Centaurea species from Turkey, C. mucronifera and C. chrysantha, collected in the same habitat, have been studied. The main compounds of the former were germacrene D (29.3%), β-eudesmol (17.4%) and β-caryophyllene (7.3%), while in the latter germacrene D (27.4%), caryophyllene oxide (9.5%) and bicyclogermacrene (5.4%) were detected among its major constituents. The two species produced many similar compounds in their essential oils that could be justified by the similar ecological conditions of their habitat, but also many differences were found that could confirm their taxonomic separation.

Flavonoid glycosides from Centaurea pseudoscabiosa subsp. pseudoscabiosa from Turkey

Three flavonoid glycosides were isolated and characterized, together with a further 13 substances belonging to various classes of compounds, in particular two phenolic acids, a coumarin, a sugar and nine flavonoids from the flowered aerial parts of Centaurea pseudoscabiosa subsp. pseudoscabiosa Boiss. et Buhse (Asteraceae). Some considerations about their evolutionary meaning are provided.

Centaurea hadimensis from the Central Taurus is described as a species new to science and illustrated. It belongs to C. sect. Psephelloideae and is allied to C. pyrrhoblephara, C. taochia and C. holtzii, which are likewise endemic to a restricted area within Turkey.

A multivariate statistical approach to Centaurea classification using essential oil composition data of some species from Turkey

The composition of the essential oils of ten Centaurea species from Turkey, Centaurea aladaghensis, C. antiochia var. prealta, C. antitauri, C. babylonica, C. balsamita, C. cheirolepidoides, C. deflexa, C. iconiensis, C. lanigera, C. ptosimopappoides have been studied. Multivariate statistical analyses (Principal Component Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) applied to GC-MS data, seem to be very useful to investigate and establish the natural taxonomic delimitation of this very difficult genus. The groupings resulted independent from the ecological similarities (i.e. plants that live in the same habitats or share similar morphological characteristics), so it seems that the environment has no influence on the biosynthesis of the volatiles of these plants.

Karyological studies of the genus Onobrychis Mill. and the related genera Hedysarum L. and Sartoria Boiss. & Heldr. (Fabaceae, Hedysareae) from Turkey

Nine chromosome counts in several genera of the tribe Hedysareae from Turkey, six species of Onobrychis, two species of Hedysarum and one species of Sartoria, were reported and all karyotypes were prepared. Six of them are new. One of the other three reports is a confirmation of polyploidy, another report is a confirmation of chromosome count and the last report is a confirmation of both chromosome count and karyotype morphology. Except for karyotype of O. altissima, all karyotypes were presented in this study first.

Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil of Prangos uechtritzii Boiss. et Hausskn. Fruits from Turkey

Abstract The chemical composition of a hydrodistilled essential oil of Prangos uechtritzii Boiss. et Hausskn. growing wild in Turkey was examined by GC/MS. Thirty-eight constituents were identified. p-Cymene (10.9%), γ-terpinene (7.0%), β-phellandrene (7.8%), α-phellandrene (6.3%) and (Z)-β-ocimene (4.6%) were found to be the major constituents of the oil.

Morphology and anatomy of Hedysarum pannosum (Boiss.) Boiss. (Fabaceae)

Abstract The aim of this paper is to investigate morphological, anatomical, palynological, fruit and seed micromorphological properties of Hedysarum pannosum (Boiss.) Boiss. A detailed description of the species is reported for the first time in this study. The morphological features of the species have been compared with the results of previous investigations. Anatomical studies have been carried out on cross-sections of roots, stems, leaflets and petioles. The anatomical results show that the plants have secondary growth roots, protruding stems, amphistomatic and equifacial leaves with tannin, triangular shaped petioles. Hedysarum pannosum pollen are tricolpate, prolate and pollen exine ornamentation is reticulate. Fruits have trichomes on their setae and tomentose trichomes have papillae. Seeds are reniform and they have rugolo-reticulate ornamentation.

Centaurea sakariyaensis (Asteraceae), a new species from Turkey

Abstract In this paper, a new Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) species from Turkey is described and illustrated. Centaurea sakariyaensis Uysal & Dural grows on rocky crevices in Sakarya province in north-western Anatolia. It belongs to C. sect. Centaurea L. and taxonomically its closest relative is C. wiedemanniana. Diagnostic morphological characters from a very similar taxon are provided, and a key from flora of Turkey is modified that includes related species of sect. Centaurea. The geographical distribution of the new species and species of other related taxa of the same section are mapped. The chromosome number of C. sakariyaensis, 2n = 18, counted in root tips, is also reported and illustrated.

Karyomorphological study of five Turkish endemic Rhaponticoides Vaill. (Asteraceae, Cardueae) species

Abstract In this paper, we aimed to determine the chromosomal features of Turkish endemic Rhaponticoides species. The chromosome numbers and karyomorphology of five species were examined. The chromosomal counts confirmed the previous reports of 2n = 30 given for Rhaponticoides species growing in different countries . Although R. iconiensis had a karyotype formula of 28m + 2sm, the remaining four species all had 26m + 4sm. Rhaponticoides aytachii and R. hierroi were especially similar in asymmetry indices. Rhaponticoides iconiensis and R. phytiae had satellites in the fourth and second chromosome pairs, respectively. Having the most symmetrical chromosomes, R. amasiensis displayed an important relationship with R. iconiensis and R. phytiae in terms of total chromosome length (TCL). If we make an overall assessment in terms of chromosomal asymmetry, chromosomes indices continues in the low range for each species and this low asymmetry indeces indicate that the species have symmetric chromosomes as karyomorphology. In conclusion, this is the first report which describes the karyotypes and chromosomal asymmetry indices of Turkish endemic Rhaponticoides species.
