Composition of Volatile Foliage Isolates from Cupressus sempervirens Varieties (Var. horizontal Mill. and pyramidalis Nyman) Growing in Turkey

Güneş Uçar; Mualla Balaban Uçar; Hüseyin Fakir

Abstract In order to differentiate two varieties of Cupressus sempervirens, volatile foliage isolates obtained from 12 trees of variety horizontalis and 12 trees of var. pyramidalis were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. About 86–87% of total peak areas of chromatograms consist of monoterpenes and evaluating their composition in qualitative and quantitative manner they do not show significant differences with regard to varieties. Some increments of terpinen-4-ol, α—terpineol and α—terpinyl acetate was recognizable in the variety horizontalis, while the variety pyramidalis contained germacrene D and abietadiene to somewhat higher level. On the other side, a higher percentage of α—fenchene than that of camphene and the presence of a monoterpene hydrocarbon sylvestrene were found to bear some chemotaxonomic value for the taxon C. sempervirens.

Türkiye’de doğal yayılış gösteren herdem yeşil meşe (Quercus L.) türlerinin anatomik özellikleri

Eda Kadem; Hüseyin Fakir

Oak species are plants that deciduous or evergreen, mostly trees and tall shrubs, bisexual, and woody plants. 18 species and 23 taxa of Quercus exist in Turkey. Oak wood is a material which is very valuable opportunity to use in various fields. The physical structure of wood does not allow the fluid passage so, it can be used in producing of storage cask for alcohol producing industry, furniture producing, ship construction, water constructions, carving, producing of musical instruments and hardwood industry. In this study, anatomic features of Quercus aucheri Jaub.& Spach, Quercus cocifera L. and Quercus ilex L. which are evergreen oak species are investigated. Relating to anatomic features, radial and tangential diameter of trahe, wall thickness, width and height of rays in tangential section, width and height of cells, trahe number in per mm 2 , the number of rays in per mm 2 , the length and width of fibers and width of lumen were studied. For Q. aucheri, the mean radial diameter of trachea, the mean tangential diameter, the mean height of rays, the width of rays and trachea number per mm 2 were found as 41.03 μm, 38.7 μm, 25.57 μm, 9.83 μm and 11.17 respectively. The mean radial diameter of trachea for Q. coccifera, the mean tangential diameter, the mean height of rays, the width of rays and trachea number per mm 2 were found as 35.4 μm, 31.37 μm, 28.37 μm, 11.73 μm and 16.23 respectively. For Q. ilex, the mean radial diameter of trachea, the mean tangential diameter, the mean height of rays, the width of rays and trachea number per mm 2 were found as 37.87 μm, 30.1 μm, 30.77 μm, 3.53 μm and 7.03 respectively. The data of the anatomical variables and prepared for statistical evaluation and variance analyses and Duncan test were conducted.

Hüseyin Fakir; Mehmet Korkmaz; Bilgin Icel

Abstract In Turkey, even if people have easy access to government and private health services, usage of plant remedies have continued to play important role in fulfilling human healthcare needs. Herbal treatment is considered relatively cheap and easy in some cases especially for low pains. The main purpose of this study was to determine how people traditionally use plant remedies for pain alleviation. The study was carried out over a period of approximately four years from 2011 to 2014, in some districts of Antalya province, situated in the Western Anatolian part of Turkey. The majority of the data sets were built up, inquiry studies with consumers and sellers. Additional information was collected through interviews with local consumers, sellers, herdsmen, village headmen, and midwives. As a result, a simplified list was created containing information on scientific names, vernacular names and plants are used for the pain alleviation of 87 plant taxa belonging to 72 genera, and 36 families. The surveys revealed that the dominant families were Lamiaceae, Asteraceaeand Apiaceae. It was found that Salviasp. Hypericumsp. and Achilleasp. were the most common genera. The use of above ground plant parts was higher than below ground part. Particularly, leaves and flowers were the most commonly used parts of plants. General preparation ways were infusion and decoction. The mentioned medicinal plants have been traditionaly used to manage or lessen pain in particular stomach ache, throat ache, toothache and abdominal pain. The results of these ethnobotanical surveys are important to find out indigeneous ethnobotanical knowledge of this area.

Sevgin Özderin; Hüseyin Fakir; İlhami Emrah Dönmez

In this study, volatile components of C. orientalis subsp. orientalis and C. orientalis subsp. szovitsii which are belonging an important howthorn taxa for Turkey, was determined. Leaf and flower samples of plant taxa were collected from Mugla-Fethiye in 2012 and dried in room temperature for determining to volatile contents of howthorn taxa and these contents were determined by GC-MS As result of analyses, totally 53 volatile components belonging to C. orientalis subsp. orientalis and C. orientalis subsp. szovitsii taxa were determined. According to GC-MS results, most effective components were determined as 2-Hexenal (38,55%), 3-Hexenol (13,98%), Capronaldehyde (6,81%) for C. orientalis subsp. orientalis and Propyl methyl ketone (26.60%), Butyraldehyde(9,37%), 2-Hexenal (6,55%) in case C. orientalis subsp. szovitsii
