In this study, several sulfonamide derivatives, 4-(2-methylacetylamino)benzenesulfonamides were synthesized. Chemical structures of the derivatives were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, LC-MS-MS, UV-Vis, FTIR, photoluminescence and elemental analysis. Sulfanilamide was reacted with 2-bromopropionyl bromide, in the presence of pyridine, to form bromo-substituted sulfonamide key intermediates, which were subsequently treated with secondary amines to obtain novel sulfonamide derivatives. All the synthesized compounds were evaluated for in vitro antimicrobial activities and cytotoxicity. Increases in ring size, and rings bearing a nitrogen heteroatom led to improvements in antimicrobial activities. As the presence of CA IX and CA XII enzymes have been implicated in some cancerous tumors, the studies presented herein focuses on targeting these enzymes. It was found that the synthesized derivatives had in vitro anti-cancer properties, where compounds (3-6) were found to be active against all cancerous cells, and no cytotoxic effects on normal cells were observed.

This research concentrates on the preparation, characterization, and photoluminescence properties of saccharide conjugated copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and its metal-free precursor (H2Pc). The H2Pc ligand gave intense emissions (where λmax = 701 nm) upon irradiation by visible light. The photoluminescence quantum yields and long excited-state lifetimes of these compounds were measured. The H2Pc has photoluminescence quantum yield of 0.42 and long excited-state lifetime of 3.89 ns. The photoluminescence intensities and quantum yields of H2Pc decreased dramatically upon complexation with copper metal and derivatization with saccharide groups.

The impact of acid and base adsorption capacities of activated carbon (AC) particles with activation condition, contact time, specific surface area (SSA), particle size, concentration, and temperature was studied. AC was pre-treated by sonication to improve the surface characteristics and enhance its adsorption capacity. Sonication increased the SSA of AC. SEM imaging showed good dispersion and uniform AC particles with an average diameter of about 0.6 μm. The adsorption results demonstrated that AC surfaces possessed effective interactions with acids and bases, and the greatest adsorption capacity was achieved with CH3COOH, where data were analyzed by Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. It was found that the isotherm data correlated well with the Freundlich isotherm. Adsorption of raw AC particles increased under sonication conditions. The adsorption process with sonicated and unsonicated AC particles obeyed pseudo first-order kinetics.
