Development of autonomous flight control system for 50m unmanned airship

Sang-Jong Lee; Seong-Pil Kim; Tae-Sik Kim; Hyoun-Kyoung Kim; Hae-Chang Lee

The unmanned airship has a capability of autonomous flight, navigation and guidance based on a telemetry command of the ground control station. In particular the unmanned airship has the peculiar characteristics of a long-duration station keeping within the given boundary compared to the UAV or fixed wing aircraft. Under these circumstances the autonomous flight control system (AFCS) is a critical system and plays a key role in achieving the given requirements and missions. The main functions of AFCS consist of three categories. First, it controls all flight operation modes and unmanned airship dynamics by the autopilot system and control laws. Second, it delivers telecommand and telemetric information between the ground control station and the onboard communication system. Finally it manages and operates a subsystem such as the electric system, propulsive system and pressurization system. In this paper, we introduce the overall design architecture of the main hardware and software of the flight control systems including flight management system (FMS) in a 50 m-long unmanned airship developed by KARI.

Development of prototype VDL Mode 2 system in Korea

Joongwon Bae; Hyoun-Kyoung Kim; In-Kyu Kim; Kwang-Jig Yang; Tae-Sik Kim

The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has been developing a prototype VDL Mode 2 system since mid of 2005. The purposes of this project are to obtain knowledge, insights and experiences of aeronautical communications trends and technologies and to prepare for future deployment of globally harmonized communication infrastructure consistent with international standards in Korea. The prototype VDL M2 system is composed of ground system and aircraft system. VDL Mode 2 transceiver (VDR), ground station, and simplified CMU and DSP were developed or implemented as a component of the prototype system. In addition, test ATS application including AFN, CPDLC and ADS functions is implemented to verify system operation. The system integration and a series of tests were done by last year and two times flight tests have been performed by April 2009. This paper describes the successful implementation of prototype VDL Mode 2 system in Korea including system architecture and design features. This paper also addresses methodology and progress of the flight test.

Target Detection Probability simulation in the homogeneous ground clutter environment

In-Kyu Kim; Sangman Moon; Hyoun-Kyoung Kim; Sang-Jong Lee; Tae-Sik Kim; Hae-Chang Lee

This paper describes target detection performance of millimeter wave radar that exits on non-stationary target detection schemes in the ground clutter conditions. The comparison of various CFAR process schemes such as CA(Cell-Average)-CFAR, GO(Greatest Of)/SO(Smallest Of)-CFAR, and OS(Order Statistics)-CFAR performance are applied. Using matlab software, we show the performance and loss between target detection probability and signal to noise ratio. This paper concludes the OS-CFAR process performance is better than any others and satisfies the optimal detection probability without loss of detection in the homogeneous clutter, When range bins increase.

MULTI-SENSOR DATA PROCESSING FOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM

Daekeun Jeon; Yeonju Eun; Hyoun-Kyoung Kim; Chan-Hong Yeom

Multi-sensor data processing (MSDP) software is developed as a core module of the surveillance data processing system (SDPS) for air traffic control. MSDP processes not only radar input but also data from ADS-B and multilateration (MLAT), allowing it to produce system tracks for other applications in the air traffic control system. The multiple plot variable update (MPVU) and the interacting multiple model (IMM) are adopted in the MSDP in order to process data from multiple sensors and to support multiple flight modes. Tracking performance test results based on EUROCONTROL surveillance standards indicate that the MSDP meets EUROCONTROL requirements.
