Porcine noroviruses (NoVs) and sapoviruses (SaVs), which belong to the family Caliciviridae, have been considered potential zoonotic agents for human infection, and several cases have been reported in Asian countries. In this study, a total of 537 porcine fecal samples collected from 64 swine farms in Korea were tested. Among 537 samples, porcine NoVs were detected by semi-nested RT-PCR in ten samples (1.9%), and porcine SaVs were detected by RT-PCR in 60 samples (11.2%), showing their circulation in Korea. The porcine NoVs were genetically related to strains of genotypes 11 and 18, of genogroup II (GII) of the genus Norovirus. The porcine SaV strains were genetically related to the porcine enteric calicivirus Cowden strain and to the previously identified Korean porcine strains in genogroup III (GIII) of the genus Sapovirus. In no case was co-infection with both NoV and SaV observed in one pig. This is the first report describing porcine NoVs identified in Korea.

ABSTRACT We analyzed the complete genome sequence containing the 3′ and 5′ noncoding regions (NCRs) of H3N2 canine influenza virus (CIV) with the matrix gene from the pandemic A/H1N1 virus, which will provide a better understanding of the pathogenesis, transmission, and evolution of variant CIV.

H3N2 canine influenza virus emerged in South Korea in 2007 and subsequently spread to China and Thailand, causing epidemic or endemic respiratory diseases in dogs. Through intermammalian species transmission, the virus has also infected cats. However, no direct evidence of significant genetic evolution has been reported since its first emergence. Here, we describe in depth the genetic and molecular characteristics of the ancestral strain (i.e., the first virus isolate from South Korea) of the H3N2 canine influenza virus currently circulating in East Asia.

High-throughput on-chip leukemia diagnosis.

S Park; Hyoung-Joon Moon; Dug-Keun Lee; H. Kim; Honggu Chun

Advances in lab‐on‐a‐chip technologies enabled programmable, reconfigurable, and scalable manipulation of a variety of laboratory procedures. Samples, reagents, and fluids can be precisely controlled; buffer temperature, pH, and concentration control systems as well as a variety of detection systems can be integrated on a small chip. These advantages have attracted attention in various fields of clinical application including leukemia diagnosis and research. A lot of research on lab‐on‐a‐chip based diagnosis has been reported and the field is rapidly expanding. This review describes recent developments of lab‐on‐a‐chip technologies as solutions to challenges for high‐throughput leukemia diagnosis.
