Abstract Results on the growth technique, spectral and luminescence characteristics of Nd3+ ions in SrWO4 Raman crystals are presented. Optimal conditions to obtain optically homogeneous single crystals free of light scattering centers and growth striations were found. The values of effective segregation coefficients of active Nd and compensating Nb ions were determined. Strontium tungstate crystal exhibits one of the highest Raman gain values (5.0 cm/GW) among Nd-doped Raman host materials. Efficient intracavity Raman self-conversion in Nd3+:SrWO4 laser was demonstrated.

The crystallization conditions for obtaining zinc molybdate single crystals by the Czochralski and Kyropoulos methods from a melt have been studied. The growth parameters of large single crystals of optical quality are determined. The physicochemical and spectral-luminescent characteristics of the single crystals are studied.

Passively Q-switched self-Raman laser oscillations in the SrMoO4:Nd3+ crystal optically pumped by a laser diode (LD) at 804 nm are demonstrated for the first time to our knowledge. Output parameters of LD-pumped SrMoO4:Nd3+ laser were investigated in free-running, passively Q-switched, and self-Raman regimes of laser operation, over a wide range of pulse repetition rates (8.5-85 kHz). A pulse energy of 21 microJ was measured in the self-Raman regime at 1163 nm (first Stokes) wavelength, which is 6 times higher than that for the GdVO4:Nd3+ self-Raman laser of similar design.

Magnesium molybdate is considered as a promising material for cryogenic scintillation bolometers. The luminescence properties of MgMoO4 have been investigated on single crystals grown from melts of stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric compositions and on crystals doped with Yb3+ ions. Their optical properties are interpreted taking into account the anisotropy of the MgMoO4 crystal structure.

A study of Yb:GdCOB under diode-bar pumping has been performed and the results are compared, experimentally and theoretically, with Yb:KGW in the same cavity. An output power of 7.3 W and a slope efficiency of 57.4% were obtained. Self-frequency-doubling experiments are also discussed.

Comparable SRS measurements were done in tungstate Raman crystals. Strontium tungstate crystal exhibits one of the highest Raman gain among Nd doped Raman host materials. Efficient intracavity Raman self-con version in Nd3+:SrWCO4 laser was demonstrated.

The paper concerns the growth of BaWO4 crystals by Czochralski method and modified Stepanov technique. The influence of different factors, such as type of die, form of crystallization front, melt composition, thermal conditions, on the real structure of the material was investigated. The origin of the defects in Czochralski-grown and bulk-profiled barium tungstate is discussed. It is shown that the striation-free bulk-profiled crystals of high optical quality can be produced by new developed technique. Comparison of the crystallization conditions for Czochralski method and Stepanov technique is carried out.© (2003) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. A new crystalline medium for 1.5 micron Yb-Er lasers is proposed: GdCa4O(BO3)3 (GdCOB). Its melting point allows crystal growth using Pt instead of Ir crucibles. Spectroscopic and laser tests of the new material are described.

Summary form only given. Barium tungstate crystal was recently developed as a new promising nonlinear material for crystalline nano- and picosecond Raman lasers. Doping this crystal with Nd/sup 3+/ ions could allow its use as a laser active element and a nonlinear Raman medium simultaneously. In this report, we present results on spectroscopic investigations of BaWO/sub 4/ crystal doped with Nd/sup 3+/ impurity ions.
