Elastic interactions between holes of diverse eccentricities, as well as between holes and cracks, are analyzed. We examine physical effects produced by interactions and the impact of hole eccentricities on these effects. Mixtures of strongly interacting holes of diverse eccentricities and sizes are of particular interest. Patterns of stress concentrations in such mixtures imply certain microfracturing patterns in materials with multiple defects.

We consider a linear elastic solid with cavities containing non viscous compressible fluid. The externally applied stress produces changes in fluid pressures in cavities that depend on the cavity orientations. This pressure polarization may produce abnormally high pressures in some of the cavities. Besides, it affects the effective elastic response of the material

Effective elastic moduli of 2-D solids with randomly located perfectly rigid elliptical inclusions are derived using non-interacting approximation. This approximation constitutes the basic building block for various approximate schemes in micromechanics of materials with interacting inhomogeneities. Anisotropy due to non-random orientation of inclusions is investigated. The results are obtained in closed form and compared against existing solutions.

Effective moduli of a 2-D anisotropic solid with elliptical holes of an arbitrary (non-random) orientational distribution are given in closed form. The results are derived in the non-interacting approximation - the basic building block for various approximate schemes. Proper tensorial parameters of defect density are identified.

In this paper, we discuss the effect of porosity on the effective elastic properties of unidirectional carbon/carbon composites (carbon fibers in pyrolytic carbon matrix) densified by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI). It is shown that CVI treatment results in formation of irregularly shaped pores randomly oriented in the plane perpendicular to the direction of fiber (transverse plane). These pores are analyzed using numerical conformal mapping procedure, and their contribution to the effective elastic properties is expressed in terms of the cavity compliance contribution tensor. Components of this tensor are found for a variety of typical pores shapes.

Effective moduli of solids with cavities of various shapes are analyzed. The analysis is based on the elastic potentials of solids with defects. The structure of the potential dictates the proper measures of density of defects. It also establishes the overall anisotropy in the case of non-random orientation.
