A number of 2-aryl-4-benzylidene-5-oxazolones was obtained by condensation of benzaldehyde with N-acylglycines. The absorption and fluorescence spectra in chloroform at 77 °K were measured. The spectral characteristics of the investigated and previously synthesized 2-phenyl-4-arylidene-5-oxazolones are compared.

Several compounds of the oxazolone series are efficient organic luminophors and emit light in the solid state [i]. Work on the absorption and fluorescence spectra of functional derivatives of the simplest -2-phenyl-4-benzylidene-5-oxazolone -has established that the spectral properties of these compounds are controlled by two competing factors, interaction of the arylidene radical with the carbonyl group of the oxazolone ring and between the Ar, and Arc radicals, the first of which has ~he greatest effect on the luminescence properties [2]

The IR spectra of a number of azlactones and their structural analogs, viz., azlactams, in solutions in carbon tetrachloride and in chloroform and in the solid phase were obtained. The character of the interaction of the carbonyl group of the heteroring with substituents with different electronic natures has a substantial effect on the frequencies of the stretching vibrations of the carbonyl group and the azomethine and ethylene bonds. The carbonyl frequencies were subjected to correlation analysis, and high conductivity of the electronic effects of substituents in the 2-phenyl-4-arylideneoxazol-5-one series was ascertained.

New difluorophors have been synthesized containing both 2-phenyl-4-benzyliden-5-oxazolone and 1,3,5-tri-aryl-2-pyrazoline fragments. A study was carried out on the effect of the structure of these compounds on their spectroluminescence properties in solvents of different polarity. Positive solvatofl uorochromy was detected. The use of these compounds as luminescent dyes for polymers was proposed taking account of their solvatofuorochromic effects.
