Tofranil in the Treatment of Post Alcoholic Depressions

Forty consecutive female depressed patients referred to the Mental Health Clinic at the Womens Correctional Center Raleigh, N.C. were randomly aSSigned to receive either active drug or placebo. All subjects were aged less than 60 years and had been incarcerated as a result of alcoholism or legal offenses occurring directly as a result of alcoholism. To be accepted in the project they had to show substantial depressive symptomatology operationally defined as a score of twenty or more in the Hamilton Rating Scale for depression. 1o They also had to be free of systemic diseases and have laboratory evaluations within the normal range.
