A multi-agent architecture for modelling and simulation of small military unit combat in asymmetric warfare

Ibrahim Cil; Murat Mala

Todays armed forces, which have a new perspective of combat, are trying to use high-end technologies to improve their capabilities especially in combat and asymmetric warfare. Complexity is the real word to define the future war environment, which will need information about multi dimensional needs. With a continuous increase in the complexity and tempo on the modern battlefield; new demands are placed on rapid and precise information dissemination. The volume of information available to the user becomes larger while the time necessary for correctly interpreting and understanding this information becomes prohibitively smaller. Not only from an informational view but also from other perspectives land combat may be described - mathematically and physically - as a nonlinear dynamical system composed of many interacting semi autonomous and hierarchically organized agent continuously adapting to a changing environment. From this point of view agent based structures are good suited for modeling and simulating complex adaptive systems. This paper proposes a two layer hybrid agent architecture to match the needs of future multi-dimensional warfare. This architecture has an integrated simulation tool to simulate planning results from the cognitive layer via reactive agents. Our work showed us that results gained from this architecture are valid in small unit combat.

Linking of Manufacturing Strategy, Market Requirements and Manufacturing Attributes In Technology Choice: An Expert System Approach

Ibrahim Cil; Ramazan Evren

ABSTRACT This paper suggests a framework for acquisition of new manufacturing technology that links the manufacturing strategy, market requirements and manufacturing attributes using an expert system approach. This paper takes a closer took at traditional notion of manufacturing-marketing coordination and attempts to find its links with manufacturing capabilities provided by recent evolving new manufacturing technology. For this purpose we deal with different steps involved in the strategic evaluation process beginning with the choice of a suitable competitive strategy by a firm. Then the chosen competitive strategy is linked with the market requirements, system attributes and appropriate manufacturing technology choices. The proposed model is integrated by an expert system approach that includes strategic factors of both a tangible and an intangible nature and is implemented by using the VP-Expert shell.

A taxonomy for measuring complexity in agent-based systems

Murat Mala; Ibrahim Cil

Project complexity receives more and more attention from researches in all fields of project management. The subject of complexity in agent based systems has not received detailed attention. This paper deals with complexity factors which can be faced by agent based system development. The model is based on a mixture of project management components and software engineering components. Also some components were retrieved by experts and practitioner through a Delphi survey.

MABSIM:A multi agent based simulation model of military unit combat

Ibrahim Cil; Murat Mala

Land combat may be described as a nonlinear dynamical system composed of many interacting semi autonomous and hierarchically organized agent continuously adapting to a changing environment. From this point of view agent based structures are suited for modeling and simulating of Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS). Our proposed architecture is a two layer improved hybrid agent architecture and is much more effective for combat solutions than the previous ones. Experiment show that it can be used for military exercises and may be in real combat situation as a decision support tool for the military decision maker-the commander.

Adaptation of lean production to the banking sektor and a simulation study

Ibrahim Cil; Selin Yalçın

Bu calismanin amaci, yalin dusunceyle bankacilikta verilen hizmetin cagdas normlara uygun duzeyde olmasi amaclanmaktadir. Yalin dusuncenin farkli hizmet sektorlerinde uygulama calismalari olmasina karsin bankacilik hizmetlerinde yalin dusunceye dayali uygulama calismalari yeteri duzeyde bulunmamaktadir. Yalin yaklasimin bankacilik sektorunde uygulanmasi, uretim sektorunden oldukca farklilik gosterir. Yalin yaklasimin Bankacilik alaninda basarili sonuclar almasi icin, yalin uygulamalarin bankacilik islemlerinin yapisina gore uyarlanarak uygulanmasi gerekir. Uretim ortamindaki deneyimi dogrudan bankacilik endustrisine uyarlamak yetersiz kalmaktadir.
