Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exposure to a 900-MHz electromagnetic field (EMF) produced by mobile phones on the renal development of prenatal rats. Histopathological changes and apoptosis in the kidneys, together with levels of urea, creatinine and electrolyte in serum were determined. Methods: A total of 14 Sprague–Dawley rats were studied. Pregnant rats were divided into two equal groups: a control group and an EMF-exposed group. The study group was exposed to 900-MHz of EMF during the first 20 days of pregnancy, while the control group was unexposed to EMF. Sections obtained from paraffin blocks were stained for caspase-3 by immunohistochemistry, hematoxylin–eosin and Masson’s trichrome. Results: Mild congestion and tubular defects, and dilatation of Bowman’s capsule were observed in the kidney tissues of rats in the exposed group. Apoptosis was evaluated using anti-caspase-3; stronger positive staining was observed in the renal tubular cells in the study group than those of the control group. Although there was a significant difference between the study and control groups in terms of K+ level (p < 0.05), no significant difference was observed in the other parameters studied (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our study shows that the electromagnetic waves propagated from mobile phones have harmful effects on the renal development of prenatal rats.

Aim: To evaluate the antioxidant effects of thymoquinone (TQ) and to investigate the biochemical, histopathological and immunohistochemical changes in experimental rat ovarian torsion. Methods: A total of 48 female adult rats were used in this study and randomly divided into 7 groups: (1) sham operation; (2) bilateral 3-hour ovarian ischemia; (3) 3-hour ischemia and 3-hour reperfusion; (4) and (5) rats were administered 20 and 40 mg/kg of TQ, respectively, before 0.5 h of ischemia, and then 3 h of ovarian ischemia was applied; (6) and (7) 3-hour ovarian ischemia was applied; 2.5 h after the induction of ischemia, rats were administered the same doses of TQ; at the end of 3 h of ischemia, a 3-hour reperfusion was applied. Histologic changes under light microscopy, immunoreactivity for anticaspase-3 and serum levels of malondialdehyde, interleukin-6, catalase and glutathione peroxidase were noted and compared between the 7 groups. Results: Ischemia and ischemia/reperfusion cause a deterioration of biochemical and histopathological parameters. Administration of TQ seems to reverse these alterations and alleviate the injury. Antioxidant defense mechanisms appear to be enhanced by the administration of TQ. Conclusion: TQ at different doses attenuates ovarian ischemia and ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats.

lateral section of the ascending aorta (Fig. 2a and b). Following these findings, a positron-emission tomography and a computed tomography scan were taken, which showed an increased metabolism in the lesion with standardized uptake values of 2.5 and suggested an active disease (Fig. 2c). After thorough consultation with a patient, a left side thoracotomy and resection of lesion was performed along with a resection of pericardium and diaphragm. Histopathologic finding showed that the lesion was a metastasis from a primary ILC (Fig. 3). She is currently undergoing her 18 month of treatment with capecitabine therapy and tolerating it well. Although metastatic breast cancer is considered as an incurable disease, a small number of patients remain disease-free for a long time. This is the first imaging report of breast cancer metastasis in the retrosternal fat tissue. The management of patients who have metastatic cancer is a systemic treatment, and the role of breast cancer metastasectomy is still unclear. The evidence of improved survival outcomes when systemic therapy is combined with local therapy (surgery or radiation), should raise up a possibility of incorporating other imaging modalities in standard for breast cancer follow-up, emphasizing the importance to recognize breast cancer metastasis at the time of suggestive symptoms.

Inflammatory pseudotumors (IPTs) are rare benign tumor-like lesions in the epididymis. They result from myofibrohistiocytic proliferation of the parenchymal organs of the body, such as the lungs and genitourinary system. A 48-year-old male patient presented with a palpable left scrotal mass and developed painless swelling within two months. Scrotal ultrasound revealed a 3 cm solid mass and spermatocele sac in the epididymis. Local excision was performed. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical examination revealed an inflammatory pseudotumor. Only ten cases have been reported in the literature to date. We present our case of pseudotumor of the epididymis as the eleventh case reported in the literature with a brief review.

Salivary Gland Choristoma of the Larynx. Balkan Med J 2017;34:288-9 ©Copyright 2017 by Trakya University School of Medicine / The Balkan Medical Journal published by Galenos Publishing House. To the Editor, Choristoma is defined as the presence of histologically normal cells in abnormal locations due to defects during embryological development (1). The criteria for the diagnosis of choristoma are a tumour-like growth, an ectopic tissue with a normal pattern and without neoplastic features histologically, and a mislocated tissue topographically. It is different from hamartoma because the hamartoma appears in normal locations. Laryngeal choristomas are rare lesions and are usually relevant to glial or thyroid tissues (2). Salivary gland choristomas (SGC) in the cheek, middle ear, neck, jaw, thyroid gland, pituitary gland, mediastinal lymph nodes, breast, anterior chest wall, oesophagus, duodenum, jejunum, rectum and amygdala have been reported (3). However, SGC of the larynx is very rare (4). A 43 year-old male patient was referred to our hospital with the complaint of hoarseness and productive coughing for six months. The patient had been smoking cigarettes for 15 years (20 cigarettes per day), but did not consume alcohol. There was neither intubation history nor any other previous history of laryngeal trauma in the patients past. Written informed consent was obtained from the patient. Laryngoscopic examination was performed, which revealed the presence of a lesion on the anterior region of the left vocal cord. The lesion was 0.5 cm in size and had a polypoid appearance (Figure 1). The lesion was completely removed by direct suspension laryngoscopy. Macroscopically, the lesion was about 0.5 cm in diameter, soft and polypoid. Microscopically, the mucosa was intact and there were no dysplasia, mitoses or any other signs of malignancy in the squamous epithelium. A choristoma-heterotopic salivary gland tissue was found under the normal epithelium (Figure 2). The lesion was composed of salivary gland acini (Figure 3). With these morphological findings, the case was reported as a SGC. SGCs are infrequent benign lesions. Only two cases have been described in the literature to date (2,4). The pathogenesis of this entity is still uncertain and is related to developmental anomalies. The differential diagnoses of these masses in the larynx comprise benign lesions such as laryngeal cyst, laryngeal nodules, contact ulcers, squamous papilloma, amyloidosis or granulomatous lesions such as Wegeners granulomatosus, sarcoidosis and tuberculosis (2). These conditions can be excluded by careful histopathological examination. Simple excision is sufficient for the treatment of these lesions. SGC should also be differentiated from some infrequent malignant lesions. Some of these lesions are primary laryngeal adenocarcinomas, metastatic adenocarcinoma, salivary glandular tumours like acinic cell carcinoma, mucoepidermoid carcinoma or adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx. These uncommon tumours are also located in other areas (5). Objectives: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the lesions containing mature adipose tissues in surgical materials of the patients who underwent thyroidectomy operation owing to the diagnosis of nodular goiter. Methods: A total of 2800 pathologic specimens of thyroidectomies stained with hematoxylin-eosin were collected between January 2010 and November 2013 in Recep Tayyip Erdogan University School of Medicine. Pathologic sections were selected from pathology archive and re-examined. Upon examination, we determined 10 lesions with mature adipose tissue within thyroid parenchyma. Results: Thyroid lesions containing mature adipose tissue were observed in 10 (0.004 %) of 2800 thyroidectomy materials. Eight of the patients were female and two of them were male. Minimum, maximum and median age of the patients were found to be 31, 74 and 52 years respectively. All of the cases had underwent a bilateral total thyroidectomy operation. In macroscopic examination of the only one cases, a homogenous yellow-gray color was observed. In other cases a large number of colloid-rich nodules of various sizes were observed. On microscopic examination, five adipose tissues in the nodules (adenolipoma-thyrolipoma), four scattered foci of mature adipose tissues (heterotopic adiposis) and one diffuse infiltrating mature adipose tissue on entire thyroid gland (diffuse thyrolipomatosis) were determined among mature adipose tissue containing lesions. A follicular variant of papillary microcarcinoma was found in two of thyrolipoma cases. Conclusion: Nodular thyroid lesions containing mature adipose tissue, as a result of particularly on the outer surface of the gland and parathyroid glands containining mature adipose tissue may mimic parathyroid gland lesion. Therefore, to prevent from inappropriate treatments, pathologists should be aware of these kinds of lesions, especially when they are investigating the lesions of parathyroid glands during an intraoperative consultation. Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the lesions containing mature adipose tissues in surgical materials of the patients who underwent thyroidectomy operation owing to the diagnosis of nodular goiter. A 22-year-old male presented at our institution with an incidentally ultrasound-detected testicular tumor. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a contrast-enhanced right intratesticular mass over 1 cm in size. The patient underwent testis sparing surgery. Pathologic examination revealed seminoma. A follow-up nine months later showed no residual tumor, a normal contour of the testis and no evidence of atrophy. Testis sparing surgery is an option for patients with small unilateral testicular tumors even in the presence of a healthy contralateral testis.
