A Review of Self-Determination Literature Implications for Practitioners

A review of the published literature on self-determination and self-advocacy was conducted to determine implications for practitioners who are interested in implementing various curricula. Articles on self-determination and self-advocacy published between 1992 and 1999 were reviewed. None of these articles were directly related to student-led Individualized Education Programs. Results of the research studies documenting the impact on developing curricula for self-determination are described.

T IS A PROFESSIONAL PRIVILEGE TO PARTICIPATE AS co-editors of this special issue, which reflects several special education reform efforts. Seymour Sarason, a noted educational researcher who has studied the implementation of school reform, wrote in 1993: &dquo;No one warmly seeks, let alone embraces, significant intellectual and personal change.... Schools have been intractable to change and the attainment of goals set by reformers. A major failure has been the inability of reforms to confront this intractability&dquo; (p. xiii). One source of the intractability is a lack of knowledge about current reform efforts and how to implement or evaluate them.
