Suctorian epibionts Thecacineta calix attached on the cuticle of nematodes Desmodora sphaerica and D. pontica are reported here from the deep-sea hexactinellid sponge Pheronema sp. from the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean). The epibiont T. calix is reported here for first time from the Andaman Sea.

The present study reports on a range extension of the suctorian species Praethecacineta halacari to the region of He-Ping-Dao, north-east of Taiwan (West Pacific Ocean), Matemwe, the east coast of Unguja, Zanzibar, Tanzania (West Indian Ocean) and Nova Scotia, Canada (West Atlantic Ocean). Praethecacineta halacari is reported here for the first time from Taiwan, Tanzania and Canada. Earlier records include the Caspian Sea, Western Australia, Brazil, India, and various coastal sites in Europe.

A taxonomic revision of order Pilisuctorida (Ciliophora, Apostomatia) with keys to the subordinate taxa

Igor Dovgal; Rosaura Mayén-Estrada

The article is to present a review of the taxonomic literature of pilisuctorid ciliates and new data from samples taken in Ukraine and Mexico. In order to contribute to the knowledge of this specialised ciliate group, the present article contains the general characteristics of order Pilisuctorida members, information on morphology and life cycles of all its representatives and some own data on distribution of three species of genus Conidophrys in Ukraine and Mexico. The taxonomic composition of this order, and diagnoses of all taxa are also included, as well the keys to the taxa.

A checklist of epibiont suctorian and peritrich ciliates (Ciliophora) on halacarid and hydrachnid mites (Acari: Halacaridae & Hydrachnidia)

Tapas Chatterjee; Igor Dovgal; Vladimir Pešić; Andrzej Zawal

Based on published records and original data, a list of the epibiont suctorian and peritrich ciliates (Ciliophora) on halacarid and hydrachnid mites is presented. Altogether 13 suctorian and 10 peritrich species from hydrachnid and halacarid mites were listed. From this list, six suctorian and one peritrich species have been reported from halacarid mites, while four suctorian and four peritrich species were found on hydrachnid mites determined up to species level. The remaining specimens were determined upto the generic level. The halacarid and hydrachnid species do not share any suctorian and peritrich species and some of the ciliate species are specific to certain taxonomic groups of the hosts. The host specificity of both suctorian and peritrich ciliates, localization on the host body and environment are discussed. Some ciliate species specific to hydrachnid mites prefer lotic or lentic habitats. In most cases, both suctorian and peritrich ciliates prefer only marine or only fresh water bodies. It was also mentioned that both suctorian and peritrich ciliates have not distinct preferences in localization on their host body.

Five species of suctorian ciliates belonging to four different genera attached to meiofaunal organisms of Maldivian archipelago (Suvadiva Atoll) were documented. Three rare species (Acineta sp., Thecacineta urceolata Liao & Dovgal, 2015 and Limnoricus ceter Jankowski, 1981) and one common suctorian ciliate Thecacineta calix (Schröder, 1907) are re-described from nematodes (Croconema cinctum Cobb, 1920, Desmodorella tenuispiculum Allgén, 1928 and Desmodora sp.) and harpacticoid copepod basibionts. In addition, Trophogemma colantonii n. sp. colonizing the abdomen and legs of the harpacticoid copepod Stenhelia sp. is described. The new species differs from the relative species for the less flattened cell body, the absence of both lateral bundles of tentacles and separate lateral tentacles as well as for the presence of longitudinal ribs along the cuticle. The data obtained in this survey give not only new important information on the taxonomy and distribution of Suctorea, but also new insights on their relationship with meiofaunal organisms in one of the most diverse and productive marine micro-habitat of carbonate sediments.
