Efficiency Assessment of Turkey's Carbonization Index

İhsan Alp; Adnan Sözen

Abstract The “carbonization index” indicator is used to analyze the “uncoupling” between CO2 emission and energy consumption. This is a useful indicator to evaluate the evolution patterns of developing countries, such as Turkey, concerning climate change. Usually, the carbonization index is measured in tons of CO2 per tons of oil equivalent. In this study, employing data envelopment analysis and the Malmquist index, Turkeys carbonization index, compared to the European Union countries have been put in place. Since the data on Malta and Cyprus was inadequate, these two nations were excluded from the evaluation. In this performance, evaluation for the input gross domestic product, total production of primary energy, net imports of primary energy, total gross electricity generation, and carbonization index has been considered as the output value. Input-oriented constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale data envelopment analysis models are used in the analysis for efficiency and productivity growth computations. The relationships between efficiency scores and input/output factors are investigated.

Malmquist Total Factor Productivity Index Approach to Modelling Turkey's Performance of Energy Consumption

Adnan Sözen; İhsan Alp

In this study, a performance evaluation of 25 member states of the European Union, Norway, Croatia, Switzerland, and Turkey (a candidate country), regarding energy consumption was conducted. A nonparametric approach based on data envelopment analysis and Malmquist Index is proposed as an alternative to the classic methods. The data set covers the years between 1998 and 2006 and energy indicators used in the analysis are taken from the EUROSAT for all countries. Results of analysis show that Turkey should make significant strategy plans about consumption and production of basic energy sources.

Turkey's Performance of Sectoral Energy Consumption

İhsan Alp; Adnan Sözen; Ş. Kazancioğlu

Abstract In this study, an energy performance evaluation of 25 member states of the European Union, Norway, Switzerland, Croatia, and Turkey, a candidate country, regarding sectoral energy consumption was conducted by using data envelopment analysis in order to allow us to draw up a good energy policy in the future. Since the data on Malta and Cyprus was incomplete, these two nations were excluded from the evaluation. The data set covers the years between 1998 and 2006 and energy indicators used in the analysis are taken from the European Statistical System (EUROSTAT) for all countries. Results of the analysis show that Turkeys most important goal for the future is to produce proper sectoral energy policies.

An Evaluation of Turkey's Energy Dependency

Adnan Sözen; İhsan Alp; Ü. İskender

Energy dependency (ED) is the energy import level upon which an economy relies in order to meet its energy needs. ED is calculated by dividing net imports by the sum of gross inland energy consumption plus bunkers. This study aims to obtain performance scores to evaluate of Turkeys ED based on basic energy indicators (Model 1), sectoral energy consumption (Model 2), and primary energy production as sources (Model 3) by using data envelopment analysis. The performance evaluation of 25 European Union member states, Norway, Switzerland, Croatia, and Turkey, a candidate country, was performed in order to draw up a good energy policy in the future for Turkey. Since the data on Malta and Cyprus were incomplete, these two nations were excluded from the evaluation. The data set covers the years between 1998 and 2006 and energy indicators used in the analysis were taken from Eurostat for all countries. The Results of the analysis show that Turkeys most important goal for the future is to produce proper energy policies in order to decrease ED.

Turkey's Performance of Energy Consumption: A Study Making a Comparison With the EU Member States

İhsan Alp; Adnan Sözen

As a candidate country for the European Union (EU), Turkey should make significant strategy plans about the consumption and production of basic energy sources. In this study, a performance evaluation of 25 member states of the EU, Norway, Croatia, Switzerland, and Turkey regarding energy consumption was conducted employing data envelopment analysis in order to draw up a good future energy policy. Since the data on Malta and Cyprus were incomplete, these two nations were excluded from the evaluation. The data set covers the period between 1998 and 2006 and energy indicators used in the analysis were taken from the EUROSAT for all selected countries. Results of th analysis show that Turkeys most important goal for the future is to produce proper energy policies.
