The internal jugular vein is a popular route for central venous catheter placement. The internal jugular veins are important venous vessels for returning blood from the brain. The internal jugular vein valves are the only venous valves between the heart and the brain. Internal jugular valve incompetence may result in retrograde cerebral venous flow during coughing and other precipitating activities. We investigated forty cadavers from legal autopsies to observe the morphological variations of the internal jugular venous valve. Valves were present bilaterally in 38 (95.0%) subjects and unilaterally in 2 (5.0%) subjects. Bicuspid valves were present in 70.5% of the valves we examined. Since the internal jugular vein is increasingly used for vascular access, knowledge about and evaluation of these valves may be useful in clinical practice to avoid damaging them during percutaneous procedures.

We encountered three cases of the intra-thyroidal ectopic thymus at autopsy and also performed three autopsy cases consisted of mothers and children, and children with severe stress. The morphological and immune histochemical characteristics of the Hassall’s corpuscles were examined in those in ectopic and normal positioned thymus, and in the thymuses obtained from mothers and children, and children with severe stress. The Hassall’s corpuscles obtained from ectopic and normal positioned thymus showed resemble morphology and stainability with antibodies. These results indicate the Hassall’s corpuscles in the intra-thyroidal ectopic thymuses also possess the biological significance.

Transomental openings are usually congenital. Transomental hernia is a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. A 36-year-old female was found to have a transomental hernia at autopsy. We report the case of the strangulated intestinal obstruction with no past history.

Morphological Variation of the Carotid Sinus Location

Background: Carotid sinus massage is widely used to detect carotid sinus hypersensitivity in patients presenting with syncope. Recent guidelines recommend 5 to 10 seconds of carotid sinus massage in supine and upright positions with beat-to-beat monitoring, but somebody did not respond to the procedure. Method and result: The aim of this study was to describe the common Carotid Artery Bifurcation (CB). Measurements were performed on 100 cadavers by the direct inspection method. The vertebra level of CB was differently distributed in distance of the whole neck measured along the vertebral column between upper borders of C1-C2 to lower border of C5. 54% of the level of CB was asymmetrical between the right and left side. Conclusion: We showed the anatomical variation of carotid sinus location. Anatomical locations of the carotid sinus bifurcation indicated wide variability. This variation was found to have an impact on the pressure transmission at the carotid sinus region in those individuals that displayed the superior/inferior range of carotid sinus loci.

We encountered an unusual case of fatal acrylamide intoxication. A 23-year-old woman obtained the acrylamide (ACR) solution from the laboratory and consumed it in her room. ACR was detected in heart blood, urine and gastric contents for toxicological examinations. High-dose ACR intoxication cause selective Purkinje cell injury in cerebellum. Most Purkinje cells express the fast and slow forms of the calcium buffer protein calbindin. Some serial sections of samples were immunohistochemically stained with calbindin (CB-955). Populations of intense calbindinimmunoreactive Purkinje cells showed no positive reactions. We describe the histopathological findings of high dose ACR-induced Purkinje cell damage in the cerebellum.
