Small-punch tests were conducted at 4, 77, and 293 K on three newly developed cryogenic austenitic stainless steels, JN1, JJ1, and JK2, which were solution treated, water-quenched, and then aged at 923, 973, 1023, and 1073 K for 5 h. Small-punch test energy was employed for the evaluation of the aging-induced embrittlement behavior in these materials. An SEM analysis of the fracture surface for the solution-treated steel specimens indicated a ductile fracture, having the highest SP test energy values. On the contrary, intergranular brittle fracture was observed in aged specimens. The small-punch test energy of materials decreased significantly as the aging process progressed. The highest and lowest decrease in small-punch test energy with aging temperature occurred in JN1 and JK2 steels, respectively. The decrease in small-punch test energy was shown to follow appropriately the aging-induced embrittlement in these materials. The difference in aging-induced embrittlement behavior for these steels was explained on the basis of the volume fraction of intergranular precipitates in aged samples.

A basic research was performed to ensure the usefulness of Small Punch-creep(SP-creep) test for residual life evaluation of heat resistant components effectively. This paper presents analytical results of initial stress and strain distributions in SP specimen caused by constant loading for SP-creep test and its experimental correlations with uniaxial creep(Ten-creep) test on 9Cr1MoVNb steel. It was shown that the initial maximum equivalent stress, from FE analysis was correlated with steady-state equivalent creep strain rate, rupture time, , activation energy, Q and Larson-Miller Parameter, LMP during SP-creep deformation. The simple correlation laws, , adopted to established a quantitative correlation between SP-creep and Ten-creep test data. Especially, the activation energy obtained from SP-creep test is linearly related to that from Ten-creep test at as follows : .

Spot-welding is a widely used manufacturing method for thin-sheet components, especially in mass-production industries such as the car industry. Automobiles are often constructed by multi-lap spot welding to secure the passenger from the accident, where optimisation of the welding conditions is a major economic consideration. This research is conducted to investigate weldability characteristics with various welding conditions on the 4-lap spot welded joint of structural steel sheets in automobile. The relationship between the tensile-shear strength and the indentation depth has been investigated to propose the optimum welding conditions. The welding current and the welding time have a greater effect on the welding characteristics than the electrode force. It was found that the electrode force has a relatively close relationship with the expulsion occurrence. The design curves for optimum welding are proposed for the 4-lap spot welded joint.
