A motion capture system using passive markers

Luís Escaramuzi Lourenço; José Remo Ferreira Brega; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello

This article describes a marker-based optical tracking system using a single camera for determining the positioning and orientation of the body joints. In this implementation, ARToolkit library as well as an approach was used in order to increase the reliability of a motion capture system by using a simplified anatomical human model.

Virtual reality for medical training: a prototype to simulate breast aspiration exam

Lucilena de Lima; Fátima de Lourdes dos Santos Nunes; Rafael Takashi; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello; José Remo Ferreira Brega

The early detection of breast cancer increases the chance of cure of the disease. The aspiration examination of a female breast provides conditions of eliminating doubts in relation to the diagnosis. This work presents a tool of Virtual Reality that contributes with the medical training to execute aspiration examination in order to allow execution of the inherent procedures how many times are necessary.

Performance measurement of information technology governance in brazilian financial institutions

Sara Cristina Boni Barbosa; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello; Silvia Inês Dallavalle de Pádua

Information technology governance is a process by which organizations align their information technology operations and services with their performance goals and strategic objectives and assess the results. The financial sector has benefited greatly from the development of information technology, primarily in bank automation. There are few research works aimed at describing information technology governance, and there are even fewer in the financial sector. This paper is aimed at measuring information technology governance in financial institutions using the methodology proposed by Weill and Ross (2004). The sample consisted of sixty professionals from financial institutions operating in Brazil. The average performance score was approximately 79.6, showing that the organizations studied have not achieved maximum performance (100), although many are very close to it. This paper describes an original empirical study of Brazilian financial institutions concerning information technology management performance. The survey investigates not only the context of performance, but also the importance that the organization places on each item related to information technology governance aligned with business needs and goals.

A theoretical analysis of key points when choosing open source erp systems

Fernando Gustavo dos Santos Gripe; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello

The present work is aimed at presenting a theoretical analysis of the main features of Open Source ERP systems, herein identified as success technical factors, in order to contribute to the establishment of parameters to be used in decision-making processes when choosing a system which fulfills the organizations needs. Initially, the life cycle of ERP systems is contextualized, highlighting the features of Open Source ERP systems. As a result, it was verified that, when carefully analyzed, these systems need further attention regarding issues of project continuity and maturity, structure, transparency, updating frequency, and support, all of which are inherent to the reality of this type of software. Nevertheless, advantages were observed in what concerns flexibility, costs, and non-discontinuity as benefits. The main goal is to broaden the discussion about the adoption of Open Source ERP systems.

Improving the way that totally or partially deaf people communicate with the world is a challenging task for our society. One way to improve their communication is to learn sign language, which is a visual language based on hand shapes, orientations, and movements of the hands, arms, or body, and facial expressions. This paper aims to present a 3D virtual reality environment to allow deaf users to communicate with each other in a real-time, synchronous, instantaneous fashion via an online chat room and to assist the teaching-learning process of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS). A three-dimensional avatar was developed which can translate words or sentences from Portuguese to LIBRAS. It was performed two experiments to evaluate the communication via the chat room: (1) with chat history enabled (visible) and (2) with chat history disabled (invisible). These evaluations involved 30 end-users, which confirmed that the virtual environment as developed here is effective to distance classes.

Information visualization: using virtual reality techniques in the three-dimensional representation of data from a medical images database

Claudia Beatriz Berti; Fátima de Lourdes dos Santos Nunes; José Remo Ferreira Brega; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello; Rafael Takashi

This paper presents the importance of representing data in a visual form in order to facilitate its understanding and introduces a proposal of a tool to information visualization from results obtained in queries of a medical image database by using three-dimensional objects. The system will be developed in non-immersive Virtual Reality environment aimed to make possible its use with computers without requirement of additional hardware and software.

Managing large scale virtual environments using portals

Luciene Cristina Rinaldi Rodrigues; José Remo Ferreira Brega; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello

This Article describes a technique for Large Scale Virtual Environments (LSVEs) partitioning in hexagon cells and using portal in the cell interfaces to reduce the number of message on the network and the complexity of the virtual world. These environments usually demand a high volume of data that must be sent only to those users who needs the information [Greenhalgh, Benford 1997].

Identifying Opportunities and Challenges for Adding Value to Decision-Making in Higher Education Through Academic Analytics.

James Kariuki Njenga; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello; Karin Hartl; Olaf Jacob

Not only have the modes of teaching in higher education drastically changed in the last years but also the role of universities in society and economy. The changes, which are driven by among others, the global competition for students, academics and funding are unlikely to relent. This puts pressure on universities and also calls for business-approaches in higher education with an ever-growing need for data-driven decision-making. Based on higher education value chain studies, this paper discusses the opportunities and challenges for academic analytics to provide relevant information for decision-making and proposes a Business Intelligence delivery framework to maximize value generation. It contributes to the dialog on the role of academic information systems and business intelligence in higher education institutions for data-driven decision-making.

Evaluation and measurement of the value provided by ERP systems: A case study with two Brazilian companies

Gleison Lopes Fonseca; Ildeberto Aparecido Rodello

This paper presents a case study with two Brazilian companies aiming at understanding the evaluation and measurement procedures of the value provided by the ERP systems implementation in order to justify the investments made. The results reported some benefits due to the system usage, mainly concerning changes on business processes and the management level. However, there was no formal evaluation or measurement process, as well as was not performed comparison between the situation before and post the implementation. It concludes that, case possibly there were a clear and well defined evaluation procedure, it would be easier to justify the investments made.
