Asymmetric synthesis of anticancer β-lactams via Staudinger reaction: Utilization of chiral ketene from carbohydrate

Bimal K. Banik; Indrani Banik; Frederick F. Becker

We describe herein asymmetric synthesis of a novel anticancer beta-lactam following Staudinger reaction with chiral carbohydrate as the ketene component with an achiral imine. The in vitro cytotoxicity studies of these beta-lactams are also reported here.

Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry | 2000

Polycyclic aromatic compounds as anticancer agents: synthesis and biological evaluation of dibenzofluorene derivatives

Frederick F. Becker; Chhanda Mukhopadhyay; Linda Hackfeld; Indrani Banik; Bimal K. Banik

Highly regioselective electrophilic substitution of dibenzofluorene was achieved and the nitro derivative was transformed to a variety of new anticancer agents.

Tetrahedron Letters | 1999

Samarium-induced iodine-catalyzed reduction of imines: synthesis of amine derivatives

Bimal K. Banik; Oliwia Zegrocka; Indrani Banik; Linda Hackfeld; Frederick F. Becker

Abstract Samarium metal induced iodine-catalyzed reduction of the imines towards the synthesis of secondary amines was investigated. The imines derived from aromatic amines produced monoamines whereas imines from arylalkyl amines gave diamines in good yield.

Synthetic Communications | 2000

Indium/Ammonium Chloride Mediated Selective Reduction of Aromatic Nitro Compounds: Practical Synthesis of 6-AminoChrysene

Bimal K. Banik; Michelle Suhendra; Indrani Banik; Frederick F. Becker

Abstract Reduction of aromatic and heteroaromatic nitro compounds to the corresponding amino compounds was achieved by indium/ammonium chloride induced reaction in aqueous ethanol. This method was extended for the preparation of large quantities of 6-aminochrysene in excellent yield.

Tetrahedron Letters | 2003

A facile synthesis of oxazines by indium-induced reduction-rearrangement of the nitro β-lactams

Bimal K. Banik; Susanta Samajdar; Indrani Banik

An indium-induced reduction-rearrangement reaction of nitro-substituted β-lactams has been used for facile synthesis of oxazines in aqueous ethanol.

Cycloaddition of naphthalenyl and anthracenyl imines: Interesting aspects of the Staudinger reaction

Bimal K. Banik; Indrani Banik; Linda Hackfeld

Cycloaddition of imines derived from naphthalene and anthracene derivatives under Staudinger reaction conditions proceeded exceedingly well with remarkable control of stereochemistry to the corresponding β-lactams.

Journal of Chemical Research-s | 2001

Synthesis of tricyclic β-lactams via palladium acetate-induced Heck reaction

Sze Sze Ng; Indrani Banik; Atsushi Okawa; Frederick F. Becker; Bimal K. Banik

Synthesis of tricyclic β-lactams via palladium acetate mediated cyclization of the unsaturated bromo β-lactam was accomplished in good yield.

Journal of Organic Chemistry | 2004

Simple Synthesis of Substituted Pyrroles

Bimal K. Banik; Susanta Samajdar; Indrani Banik

Journal of Medicinal Chemistry | 2003

Stereoselective Synthesis of β-Lactams with Polyaromatic Imines: Entry to New and Novel Anticancer Agents†

Indrani Banik; Frederick F. Becker; Bimal K. Banik
