Shielding static magnetic fields from Magnetic Resonance Imaging units by ferromagnetic material

Tarmo Koppel; Peeter Ross; Inese Vilcane

This study investigated the effectiveness of iron sheets in shielding static magnetic fields from MRI units. The neighbouring rooms of two 3T MRI units were measured, located in different healthcare facilities, one fully shielded and the other only partially shielded (only the ceiling was shielded) from static magnetic fields. In order to achieve a significant shielding effectiveness from the MRI static magnetic field, the examination room should be fully shielded, including the walls, ceiling and the floor. The MRI unit with only partially shielded room allowed ten times more static magnetic field to propagate into the premises one floor below. The average static magnetic field below partially shielded MRI unit was 1.178 mT, whereas below fully shielded MRI unit 0.176 mT.

Most of the chemicals make our everyday life easier and safer. However, there are a lot of new emerging risks connected with chemicals causing damage to people’s health and environment. The results of the investigation: the chemical exposure index (EI) is between 0.16 to 25.98 (the last determined by the mould spray-up, outside of the protective masks). The air pollution index determined was between 16 to 760%. The ventilation rates for the remove of the volatiles from the workplace air are settled, the possibilities for substitution of hazardous chemicals to less hazardous are presented. When the concentration of a volatile is measured under the protective mask, which has a new filter, the tested substance concentration is lower that under the mask with an old filter, although the differences between these two were rather small. When the volatiles were measured under the protective mask, the concentrations of tested substances met the requirements.

Training Studies with Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus – Methodology, Exercises

Roberts Buks; Jelena Malahova; Valentina Urbane; Vladimirs Jemeļjanovs; Inese Vilcane

Abstract The current article describes topics ranging from the respiratory physiology and the structure of compressed air breathing apparatus to the performance of practical training exercises in an unbreathable environment (hereinafter referred to as UE). The State Fire and Rescue Service (hereinafter referred to as SFRS) also carries out regular training studies in the UE, but these studies lack the methodology. The research results could be used as a basis for the implementation of theoretical and practical training methods/exercises when training the SFRS officers.
