A perpendicular magnetic recording and reproducing thin film head of a structure excellent in magnetic characteristics and easy of fabrication, wherein a lower magnetic layer disposed on a flat nonmagnetic substrate is used as a main magnetic pole, a first insulator layer is formed on the main magnetic pole, a conductor for a coil and a second insulator layer are disposed on the first insulator layer, and an upper magnetic layer which lies in contact with the lower magnetic layer through the first insulator layer at one end thereof and directly at the other end thereof and which overlies the second insulator layer in a part thereof other than both the ends is disposed and used as an auxiliary magnetic pole.

Abstract Hafnium carbide and nitride whiskers are grown by chemical vapor deposition from the vapor phase (HfCl 4 -CH 4 -H 2 and HfCl 4 -N 2 -H 2 ) in relatively low temperature regions (1000–1450°C). These whiskers grow preferentially by the vapor-liquid-solid mechanism and nickel is found to be an effective liquid forming element at the whisker growth sites.

The dependence of write and read characteristics on the spacing for a probe-type head/double-layer perpendicular magnetic recording media system and for a ring head/single-layer perpendicular media system was measured. Write efficiency for the probe-type head/double-layer film system was five times that of the ring head/single-layer film system, and output for the latter was approximately 1/10 that of the former. Thus the probe-type head/double-layer film media system has good read after write efficiency and its spacing loss is small, confirming that it is a good arrangement for application to rigid disk devices.
