Microalbuminuria as a cardiovascular biomarker in patients with COPD

Background - Microalbuminuria is an important risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Microalbuminuria is frequent in COPD patients and is associated with hypoxemia independent of other cardiovascular risk factors. Aims - To assess the prevalence and relationship of microalbuminuria (MAB) with clinical and physiological parameters in stable patients with COPD. Methods - 50 stable COPD patients were included. Detailed History was taken and Urine Albumin to Creatinine ratio(UACR) from Spot morning Urine Sample, Arterial blood gas analysis, Spirometry, BODE Index (body mass index,airflow obstruction,Mmrc grading of dyspnea,exercise performance by 6MWD) was performed. The presence of Microalbuminuria was defined as UACR being ≥ 20 mg/gm in men and ≥30 mg/gm in women. Results - Out of 50 patients, 13 (26%) had significant UACR. Pearson correlation analysis showed significant negative correlation between MAB and PaO 2 ( p 2 ) (p Conclusion - Microalbuminuria in COPD patients could be an early simple biomarker of cardiovascular compromise and may be monitored for risk of cardiovascular morbidity or mortality. Presence of Microalbumiuria in COPD could be a therapeutic target for Cardiovascular risk reduction.
