INTRODUCTION Various viral infections are thought to play a role in the development of atherosclerosis. A number of studies suggest that certain viruses from the Herpesviridae family in particular may lead to atherosclerosis. METHODS We investigated the presence of human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6), human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7), and human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) DNA in carotid, iliac, and coronary artery specimens obtained from a group of adult autopsy cases by means of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis and nested PCR techniques. A 28-subject study group with at least type IV atherosclerosis and a 25-subject control group with no visible atherosclerosis were enrolled. RESULTS HHV-6 DNA was found in the carotid artery specimen of 1 subject with atherosclerosis, in an iliac artery specimen of another subject, and in the iliac artery specimen of one of the control subjects. HHV-7 or HHV-8 DNA was not found in either the atherosclerosis or control cases. CONCLUSIONS This study is the first to demonstrate the presence of HHV-6 in atherosclerotic vascular tissues. HHV-7 and HHV-8 were not found in atherosclerotic tissues; however, further research on broader study groups and with different protocols is needed to determine whether these viruses play a role in the formation of atherosclerosis.

Objective: The concept of child mothers includes individuals who have given birth below the age of 18 years. In this study, the subject is addressed of individuals who have given birth at a much younger age (10 years and below). Material and methods: Studies were examined from different countries to examine the information on the ages of cases, types of birth and by whom they had been made pregnant. Results: The child mothers had been made pregnant by the husband in 3 (3%) cases, by the step-father in 11 (12%) cases, by a relative in 30 (32.4%) cases and by others in 35 (37.8%) cases. In 29 caes (31.3%) the identity of the father was not known. Conclusion: This study aimed to be a reminder of the need to overcome child abuse, which is masked by the excuses of religion or tradition, by presenting a reminder of the reality of ‘mothers below the age of 10 years’. Better identification and increased awareness of child abuse will prevent the confusion of it with the historical concept of child mother. By presenting a reminder of one of the greatest shames of humanity in the last century, it is aimed to create an awareness against the concept of child abuse and child bride/child mother.

Poisoning is a major problem worldwide among children. Nonetheless, the offending agent, the associated morbidity and mortality vary from place to place and show changes over a period of time. The aim of this study was to investigate the medico-legal paediatric autopsies of childhood poisonings in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey. Reports of autopsies performed between 2009 and 2013 in the Morgue Department of the Council of Forensic Medicine. All medico-legal paediatric autopsies in Trabzon (n:1049) were retrospectively examined. The study comprised an investigation into 62 deaths from poisoning in children aged 0-18 years. The parameters of age, sex, toxic substance category and origin were evaluated. Poisoning accounted for 5.9% of the deaths of children aged 0-18 years. Of the 62 cases, 32 (51.6%) were male and 30 (48.4%) were female, giving a female to male ratio of 1/1.1. The primary causes of fatal poisoning in children were carbon monoxide (64.5%, n = 40), followed by drugs (16.1%, n = 10), insecticides (9.7%, n = 6), mushrooms (6.5%, n = 4), and snake venom (3.2%, n = 2). The results of this study implicated carbon monoxide poisoning as a serious risk factor for mortality in our region. Childhood poisoning may be prevented by public education and simple precautions in general.

and signature comparisons are frequently per- formed in forensic investigations of documents. Mistakes in conclu- sion might be due to lack of sufficient documentation and informa - tion. Many factors can affect handwriting and signature. These fac- tors are divided into two groups: dependent or independent of the in- dividual at the time the handwriting or signature is made. Therefore, the situations leading to differences between individuals and in the individuals own handwriting and signature should be determined. Currently, average life expectancy and quality have increased due to the developments in health services. Thus, an increasing number of elderly people are engaged in an active daily life and trade. Alzhei- mers Disease (AD) can develop in the elderly; this is a condition that could alter handwriting and signature considerably over time. In forensic document examination, comparing the document in question containing handwriting or signature with the original documents prepared before the document in question was prepared is important. However, if alterations have developed secondary to a disease, the documents prepared before and after the disease af- fected the individual should be assessed together. Likewise, in the present case, the examiners making com- parisons using handwriting and signatures from different periods reached entirely different conclusions. The case is a bill prepared in 1994. The payee of the bill is a male born in 1925 and diagnosed with AD shortly before his death in 1998. The indebted person in the bill is the payees spouse. For the assessment of handwriting and signature, the first endorsement consisting of the handwritten name and signature was used. Sev- eral expert reports regarding the same document had been commis- sioned; these reached different views. The document was sent to The Council of Forensic Medicine to assess the identification and the previous reports. After re-evaluation, the handwriting was de- clared to belong to the payee. In this study, the reason that the experts delivered opposing opinions on the identification of a document handwritten by a per - son with AD after being referred to court was investigated. Based on the judicial file, the document examiners did not have the opportunity to evaluate all factors affecting the handwriting or signature of the individual, and an adequate number of handwrit- ing and signature examples were not collected for comparison. Consequently, the examiners reached different opinions. Thus, the above-mentioned factors are necessary to derive a satisfactory and accurate opinion regarding the identification of handwriting or sig - nature.
