Development of remote monitoring and control system for mechatronics engineering practice: The case of flexible manufacturing system

The purpose of this study is to design a test set with remote access so that it can be used in laboratory applications in a multidisciplinary engineering education. The test set equipment used in the study consists of work stations that belong to the flexible manufacturing system, which is designed by the Festo Didactic Company. The flexible manufacturing system is a didactic set for mechatronics training. It can be used with different configurations and training purposes. In this study, the flexible manufacturing system set has nine work stations with different functions from each other. These stations such as distributing, testing, processing, handling, sorting, etc. can be worked alone and together with several assembly line configurations. In the developed didactic model, the existing equipment of the system such as mechanical and electrical infrastructure was used. Control of all the stations was realized by designing PIC 18F4580 and 18F2585 microcontrollers-based hardware. Control area network was used as the communication protocol between the work stations of the flexible manufacturing system. Online monitoring and real-time control operations for all parameters of the designed system were performed over the software which was developed using the LabVIEW program. Users who are connected to the system via the Internet can control the system using the designed LabVIEW-based software. Furthermore, they can upload–download their programs which will be written by them to the system via the Internet, and they can see the results of their own operational scenarios. Thus, the system with its developed structure is not restricted to existing operational scenarios for students. Hence, it has gained flexibility by allowing students to try their programs remotely. Also, in order to obtain feedback about the designed structure of the didactic system, a survey, conducted on 29 engineering students, was realized. The presented structure of the mechatronic didactic system was found to be successful by the students who joined the survey.

Energy Efficiency in Natural Stone Cutting Process

The aim of this experimental study was to reduce electric energy consumption in marble cutting operation. We designed a prototype circular saw block cutting machine for marble cutting experiments. Fully computer-controlled this experimental set-up has a LabView based data acquisition and control system. In this study, manual and automatic cutting experiments were performed for three natural rocks (Cankiri beige and Afyon white marble and Denizli travertine). In experiments, travel speed is kept fixed in manual mode as usual in industry. Travel speed is controlled in automatic mode during the cutting process. Travel speed is controlled depending on specific energy. It is observed that, if automatic cutting is performed, electric energy saving can be provided in all of three rocks. Though energy saving is provided in all of three rocks, the best energy saving is provided in Cankiri beige marble.

Gunumuzde uretim sektorunde hiz onemli bir faktor haline gelmistir. Bundan dolayi uretilen urunlerin agirliklarinin tartimlarinin da hizli bir sekilde yapilmasi gerekmektedir. Hizli bir sekilde tartim islemi yapabilmek icin dinamik tartim sistemleri gelistirilmistir. Dinamik tartim sistemlerinde urunler tartim platformu uzerinden hareket halinde gecerken tartilmaktadirlar ve istenilen tartim hizlarina bu sekilde ulasilabilmektedir. Ancak dinamik tartim sistemlerinde urunun hareketli tartilmasindan dolayi sistemdeki mekanik titresimler olcum sinyalinde istenmeyen bir bozucu etki olusturmaktadir. Geleneksel olarak bu sinyal filtrelendikten sonra urunun stabil oldugu andaki tartim agirligi bir metot kullanilarak belirlenmeye calisilmaktadir. Genellikle urunler agiliklari belirlendikten sonra belirli agirlik siniflarina gore tasnif edilmektedirler. Bu calismada dinamik olarak tartilan yumurtalarin Gida Tarim Hayvancilik Bakanligi Turk Gida Kodeksi Yumurta Tebliginde belirtilen agirlik siniflarina gore tasnif edilmesi destek vektor makineleri kullanilarak dogrudan ham veriyle gerceklestirilmistir.

Digital Signal Processing–based Dynamic Mass Measurement System for Egg Weighing Process

In this study, an electronic, mechanical and software system, where the weight measurements of eggs can be performed dynamically, is developed. As the speed is an important factor in the production sector, it is of significant importance that the manufactured products be weighed in a rapid and correct manner. For this reason, systems where the products are dynamically weighed are developed. However, as the products are weighed while they are moving in dynamic weighing systems, undesired disturbing effects occur on the measurement signal. The product weights must be measured at required speeds by eliminating this disturbing effect. Dynamic weighing is performed using a load cell. A digital signal processing–based card has been developed to measure the signal received from the load cell and to send it to the computer. The eggs are weighed while they are moving as they roll over the load cell. A program has been developed using the LabVIEW program to receive, filter and analyze the data read and sent to the computer by digital signal processing. In addition, the configuration adjustments of the integrated analog-to-digital converter that reads data from the load cell can also be performed thanks to this program.
