OBJECTIVE: To describe the social representations of nurses about tuberculosis patients. METHODS: A qualitative research was undertaken, based on Social Representations Theory. To produce the data, the individual interview technique was applied, involving 52 nurses, using a script with closed questions about the personal and professional profile and another script with 27 open questions that explored knowledge and action in their daily work with the patients. For analysis, thematic content analysis was applied. RESULTS: The nurses build social representations based on the stereotyped patients, associate them with the idea of receptacles of the disease, besides linking vulnerability with illness and social conditions. CONCLUSION: Social representations about tuberculosis patients are organized based on fear, resting on physical, psychological and social characteristics that help the nurses to outline fhe type-figure of the patient as dangerous.

METHOD methodological study with data collection using a four-point Likert scale for evaluation by eleven judges and 51 people living with HIV. The data were tabulated, processed, and analyzed by inferential and descriptive statistics, Cronbachs alpha test, and Kruskal-Wallis for reliability and internal consistency analyses. RESULT the Cronbachs alpha was 0.974 for judges and 0.694 for the target audience, reliable values. Kruskal-Wallis tested hypotheses H0 and H1 with significance of 0.05. H0 was accepted with significance of 0.395 for judges and 0.187 for the target audience, demonstrating agreement on the distribution of answers. Judgements with favorable response of at least 70% were considered relevant, according to the performed tests. CONCLUSION the technology presents high reliability and good internal consistency, being deemed appropriate.

OBJECTIVE to describe the social representation of nurses on tuberculosis and identify the implications on nursing care. METHOD qualitative research with the participation of 52 nurses from 23 Basic Health Units of Belém, Pará. A semi-structured interview was conducted with subsequent analysis of the thematic content according to the Theory of Social Representations. RESULTS the social representations of tuberculosis were organized into two categories: infection, evidencing the clinical-epidemiological aspects of the disease, and stigma and prejudice, representing the social aspect. Care is affected by fear - a fact that explains the distance adopted by some nurses when handling ill people. CONCLUSION the social representations of nurses on tuberculosis remain grounded in fear, leading professionals to keep a certain distance from patients and generating stigma and prejudice, which may affect adherence to treatment.
