The presented research removes common constraints regarding the design of layout of flexible manufacturing system, and the subsequent search for a good solution is left solely to artificial intelligence. The proposed system is composed of a creative subsystem which can use different evolutionary optimization methods, and a subsystem for evaluating layouts. In the presented work the subsystem for creation uses a particle swarm optimization method for the creation/modification of solution sets. Evaluation of solution quality is made using intelligent search of the shortest travel paths within the layout. This system has proved to be innovative since it proposes very good solutions which are oriented to the main task of the system and are not simplified because of human limitations.

Article presents the development and manufacture of a new generation of thermal manikins that can be used for testing different personal protective equipment as used under extreme environmental conditions. The demonstrated steps from the initial idea towards the final product were taken with the help of modern CAD/CAM tools and CNC manufacturing procedures. This article also presents some of the problems that occurred and had to be solved during the designing, manufacturing and assembly of the thermal manikin. Keywords:

The process of designing of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) is one of the Floor Layout Problems (FLPs) with added system-specific constraints. The problem is recognised as suitable for solving with Genetic Algorithms (GAs). In the paper, the solution of row-based FMS based on GAs is presented. The model consists of system-specific coding, where organism carries only a very general description of the layout. Additional technological constraints are added in the process of decoding the organism into the layout. In this way, the most favourable number of rows and the sequence of devices in the individual rows are established.
