Can an Oesophageal pH Electrode be Accurately Positioned Without Manometry

Twenty-four-hour recording of pH is now generally accepted as the most accurate method of assessing gastro-oesophageal reflux [1]. Conventionally the pH electrode is positioned 5 cm above the lower oesophageal sphincter, this position being determined by prior oesophageal manometry.
