A critical evaluation of the indications for E.R.C.P.

M. Lombard; F. Murray; G. Connolly; J. Lennon; J. Crowe

SummarySix hundred and eight retrograde endoscopic examinations of the pancreato-biliary system in 514 patients are reviewed. Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio — Pancreatography (E.R.C.P.) was found to be a useful diagnostic investigation for patients presenting with obstructive jaundice with or without pain. Pain alone was a poor indication for E.R.C.P. The examination allows a clear distinction to be made between tumour and stones in patients with dilated bile ducts and furthermore offers the possibility of concomitant therapeutic intervention for choledocholithiasis with a low complication rate.
