Deep-inelastic back-angle yields and orbiting in 28Si + 12C

Abstract Evidence for a long-lived orbiting complex has been found in large-angle measurements of strongly damped reaction products from the 28 Si + 12 C interaction. The well-known backward rise in the elastic yield is mirrored, but with much larger cross sections, in processes involving strong damping of the total kinetic energy. The average kinetic energy loss is independent of angle beyond θcm = 140°, and varies smoothly with bombarding energy with a slope characteristic of the orbiting two-body moment of inertia.

Resonances in 36Ar via the 24Mg(12C, α)32S reaction☆

N. Cindro; J. D. Moses; Nelson Stein; M. Cates; Darrell M. Drake; D.L. Hanson; J. W. Sunier

Abstract Measurements of the 24Mg(12C, α)32S reaction at θlab = 5° between Elab = 27.5 and 35.5 MeV show resonance structure in the excitation functions for the ground and first excited states. Ground state angular distributions at five incident energies can be fit by P2J (cos θ) functions with J-values ranging from 10 to 14, which are consistent with the entrance channel grazing angular momenta. The data are discussed within the contexts of (1) Ericson fluctuations and (2) a rotational-like band of resonances.

Elastic scattering of 28Si on 24Mg and 26Mg

N. Cindro; D. Počanić; D.M. Drake; J. D. Moses; J. C. Peng; Nelson Stein; J. W. Sunier

Abstract Backward-angle excitation functions and angular distributions measured in 28 Si + 24 Mg elastic scattering show structure of intermediate width. The nature of this structure is investigated. Complementary data for 28 Si + 26 Mg display a smooth backward-angle excitation function.
