It Takes Two to Tango, Doesn't It? the Influence of Couple Characteristics on the Timing of the Birth of the First Child

Most children are conceived and born within a stable partner relationship. As such the decision to have a child is usually jointly made by the man and women involved. Empirical research into the factors which influence fertility behavior usually focuses only upon the characteristics of women. This paper however explores the timing of the first childbirth using information about the characteristics of both partners. The context specificity of the determinants of childbearing is examined by comparing couples with and without cohabitation experience. Sociocultural specificity is studied using data from the Netherlands and Flanders. Results are derived from the application of hazard models to data for a representative sample of 1438 young couples. In Flanders a sphere-of-interest rule of decision making is found to generally govern decision making with regard to the timing of the first birth among couples while an egalitarian rule predominates in the Netherlands. Contextual differences show that more specific theories on factors which influence the family formation process are needed.

Social isolation and loneliness

Social isolation, the objective characteristics of a situation of a small-sized social network, is frequently mentioned as a major risk factor for loneliness and mental health problems. In contrast to social isolation, loneliness is the subjective experience of a situation as one of an undesired lack of (quality of) certain relationships. Although social isolation is strongly associated with loneliness, there is not a direct simple association between both phenomena. The standards or wishes for specific types of relationships and the varying cognitive discrepancy experienced are crucial intermediates between social isolation and loneliness.

Eenzaamheid onder kwetsbare oudere mannen en vrouwen: Oorzaken en oplossingen

Samenvatting‘Wel omringd’ zijn door familieleden en niet-familieleden die men met enige regelmaat ontmoet is van groot belang voor de kwaliteit van leven op oudere leeftijd. In deze bijdrage is eenzaamheid aan de orde, het als negatief ervaren gemis aan (kwantiteit en/of kwaliteit van) contacten met anderen, met speciale aandacht voor de eenzaamheid van ouderen die in een kwetsbare gezondheidssituatie verkeren. Na een definiëring van het begrip eenzaamheid en het onderscheid tussen objectieve en subjectieve sociale isolatie volgt een beschrijving van de oorzaken van eenzaamheid en van de risicogroepen.
