Probing and feeding behavior of Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hom., aphididae) on three wheat cultivars infected with barley yellow dwarf virus

The feeding behavior of the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae, was electronically monitored for 3‐h periods on wheat cultivars ‘Caldwell’, ‘Abe’, and ‘Talento’ infected and non‐infected with the P‐PAV and RPV‐NY isolates of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). Aphids feeding on healthy plants had shorter non‐probing time, and achieved more phloem contacts than those on BYDV‐infected plants. S. avenae showed a preference type of response to BYDV‐susceptible ‘Abe’ and ‘Talento’ wheat cultivars infected with P‐PAV, as indicated by a fewer number of probes, a shorter salivation time, and a shorter time to committed (>30 min) phloem ingestion than on ‘Caldwell’ wheat (resistant). No significant differences were found between BYDV‐free cultivars.
