Polysulfone-Nylon 6 Block Copolymers and Alloys

J. E. McGrath; Lloyd Mahlon Robeson; Markus Matzner

We have been interested in the field of block copolymers and alloys for over a decade. Our work published to date(1–10) has described some of our studies in the area of thermoplastic elastomers. Several interesting materials were uncovered and characterized. Moreover, some important rheological phenomena were also described(10).

Polystyrene-Poly (α-Methyl Styrene) AB Block Copolymers and Alloys

Lloyd Mahlon Robeson; Markus Matzner; L. J. Fetters; J. E. McGrath

An in-depth investigation of a variety of block copolymers has been in progress in our laboratories for several years.(1–20) One of the most intriguing aspects of block copolymers lies in the fact that mechanical compatibility (i.e. polysulfone-Nylon 6)(20) or even true polymer-polymer solubility can be achieved.

Polyethylene-Nylon 6 Graft Copolymers I. Mechanical Properties and Permeability Characteristics of Copolymers Prepared by Anionic and and Cationic Initiated Processes

Markus Matzner; D.L. Schober; R. N. Johnson; Lloyd Mahlon Robeson; J. E. McGrath

A graft copolymer of polyethylene and nylon 6 combines two materials each of which possesses good properties. As is well known, polyethylene is a tough flexible polymer which is insensitive to moisture. Oxygen permeability is intermediate and its crystalline melting point (Tm) is relatively low. Nylon 6, on the other hand, has very low oxygen permeability (dry) coupled with a high Tm of 218°C. However, nylon 6 displays strong sensitivity to moisture. Therefore its utility is significantly impaired under conditions of high humidity.
