We present measurements of bulk properties of the matter produced in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7,11.5,19.6,27, and 39 GeV using identified hadrons (π±, K±, p, and p) from the STAR experiment in the Beam Energy Scan (BES) Program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Midrapidity (|y| < 0.1) results for multiplicity densities dN/dy, average transverse momenta (pT), and particle ratios are presented. The chemical and kinetic freeze-out dynamics at these energies are discussed and presented as a function of collision centrality and energy. These results constitute the systematic measurements of bulk properties of matter formed in heavy-ion collisions over a broad range of energy (or baryon chemical potential) at RHIC.

System, centrality, and transverse mass dependence of two-pion correlation radii in heavy ion collisions at 11.6A and 14.6A GeV/c

Two-pion correlation functions are analyzed at mid-rapidity for three systems (14.6 A-GeV Si+Al, Si+Au, and 11.6 A-GeV Au+Au), seven distinct centrality conditions, and different kT bins in the range 0.1--0.5 GeV/c. Source reference frames are determined from fits to the Yano-Koonin source parameterization. Bertsch-Pratt radius parameters are shown to scale linearly with both number of projectile and total participants as obtained from a Glauber model calculation. A finite emission duration that increases linearly with system/centrality is also reported. The mT dependence of the Bertsch-Pratt radii is measured for the central Si+Au and Au+Au systems. The system/centrality dependence is investigated separately for both high and low mT regions.

Abstract Recent single-particle inclusive measurements and two-particle correlation data from E802 and its succesor, E859, are presented. The K + / π + ratio observed for collisions of 14.6 A·GeV 28 Si ions on various targets is presented as a function of both forward and transverse energy. Source sizes are determined via interferometry using π + , π − , K + and proton pairs.

The first data from a16O beam of total energy 232 GeV at the BNL Tandem-AGS are discussed. Preliminary results from a28Si beam of total energy 406 GeV are also shown. The full complement of E802, including a magnetic spectrometer, was used for the28Si measurement. A different experimental arrangement was used for16O. Comparison measurements with proton beams are presented for both configurations.

Future of low-x forward physics at RHIC

Abstract.Comparisons of particle production from high-energy ion collisions with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations show good agreement down to moderate transverse momentum values. Distributions of azimuthal angle differences between coincident hadrons in these collisions support a partonic origin to the particle production, again down to moderate transverse momentum values. The rapidity dependence of inclusive and coincident particle production can therefore be used to probe parton distribution functions down to small momentum fractions where theory anticipates that parton saturation could be present. This paper describes how such experiments could be completed.

Abstract Measurements of the global transverse energy distributions dσ / dE T and dE T / dη using the new AGS beam of 197 Au at 11.6 A GeV/ c on a Au target, as well as a beam of 28 Si at 14.6 A GeV/ c on Al and Au targets, are presented for a leadglass detector with acceptance 1.3 ≤ η ≤ 2.4 and 0 ≤ φ π . The dσ / dE T spectra are observed to have different shapes for the different systems and simple energy rescaling does not account for the projectile dependence. The Au+Au dσ / dE T spectrum is satisfactorily constructed from the upper edge of Si+Au by the geometric Wounded Projectile Nucleon Model after applying a correction for the beam energy.

p and d production in relativistic heavy ion collisions: Results of BNL-E858

Abstract The production of long-lived negative secondaries, including π − , K − , antiprotons ( p ) and antideuterons ( d ) at 0° in Si+Au, Si+Cu, and Si+Al collisions at the BNL-AGS has been measured using a double-bend, double-focussing spectrometer. The p rapidity spectra from all three targets are well fit by Gaussians centered ( y = 1.7 − 1.8 ) at mid-rapidity, and are consistent with production in nucleon-nucleon first collisions. The d p 2 ratio in Si+Au collisions is lower by a factor of 10 than that seen in p+p and p+A collisions.

Abstract This paper presents recent results from Experiment 859 at the BNL AGS, focussing on strangeness ( K ± , Λ, Λ ), rare probes ( p , φ) and two-particle correlations. Highlights of the paper include an analysis of the centrality dependence of K ± yields in terms of the number of participants, a brief review of the current status of the E859 Λ and Λ data, an analysis of the target dependence of p yields in terms of p K − ratios, results of a re-analysis of Λ feed-down contamination of p s, a comparison of the cenal Siue5f8Au and pue5f8p φ yields through the φ K − ratio, an extremely preliminary study of the centrality dependence of the φ line-shape, a summary of the centrality dependence of two-π correlation source sizes, and a comparison of results from two-dimensional analyses of the two-π and two-K + correlation functions.
