Analyses of 0.8 and 1 GeV p+/sup 208/Pb elastic angular distribution data have obtained neutron-proton root-mean-square radius differences (..delta..r/sub n/p) which are not consistent. Therefore, the 0.8 GeV experiment was repeated using a high resolution spectrometer. The new higher precision data are consistent with the older data, apart from a 15% overall normalization difference. A second order Kerman-McManus-Thaler optical model analysis of the new data, using a model-independent neutron density, yields ..delta..r/sub n/p=0.14 +- 0.04 fm, in good agreement with the most recent result obtained (0.16 +- 0.05 fm) from a similar analysis of the older 0.8 GeV data. In addition, the elastic angular distribution was extended to 42.5/sup 0/ center of mass in order to explore the momentum transfer region from 3.5 to 5.3 fm/sup -1/. Although the familiar diffraction pattern persists to 42.5/sup 0/, it was not possible within the framework of our application of the Kerman-McManus-Thaler optical model to fit the data even qualitatively at the larger momentum transfers.

Abstract Differential cross sections and analyzing powers for elastic scattering of 800 MeV polarized protons from 46,48Ti have been measured at laboratory angles ranging between 4° and 21°. The data are analyzed within the spin-dependent KMT formalism. Neutron density distributions are extracted and compared with the results of other experiments and with theoretical predictions. Disagreements between empirical results and DME calculations are found.

The present LAMPF Q data acquisition/analysis software system is being converted to run under the RSX-1lM operating system. Major subsystems have been redesigned to be compatible with RSX-11M and to provide enhanced functionality. In addition, two new major subsystems have been designed: a test package subsystem and a real-time parameter array subsystem.

Abstract Pion inelastic scattering on 12 C to states at an excitation energy of approximately 19 MeV shows a strong enhancement at an incident pion energy near the pion-nucleon (3,3) resonance. This resonance may therefore provide a mechanism for the selective enhancement of inelastic transitions.

High quality analyzing powers for the {pi}{sup {minus}}{rvec p}{r_arrow}{pi}{sup 0}n reaction have been obtained with a polarized proton target over a broad angular range at incident kinetic energies of 98.1, 138.8, 165.9, and 214.4 MeV. This experiment nearly doubled the existing {pi}N single-charge-exchange database for energies ranging from 10 to 230 MeV, with 36 new analyzing powers. The Neutral Meson Spectrometer was used to detect the outgoing neutral pions. The data are well described by recent phase-shift analyses. When combined with high-precision and accurate cross section data at the same energies, the data can provide a good test of the degree of isospin breaking in the region of the {Delta}(1232) resonance. They will also be helpful for constraining the evaluation of the pion-nucleon {sigma} term from the scattering amplitudes. {copyright} {ital 1999} {ital The American Physical Society}High quality analyzing powers for the
