Results on beam tests of 3D silicon pixel sensors aimed at the ATLAS Insertable B-Layer and High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) upgrades are presented. Measurements include charge collection, tracking efficiency and charge sharing between pixel cells, as a function of track incident angle, and were performed with and without a 1.6 T magnetic field oriented as the ATLAS inner detector solenoid field. Sensors were bump-bonded to the front-end chip currently used in the ATLAS pixel detector. Full 3D sensors, with electrodes penetrating through the entire wafer thickness and active edge, and double-sided 3D sensors with partially overlapping bias and read-out electrodes were tested and showed comparable performance.

Abstract We show that proportional pulses as well as streamer pulses can be detected in an RPC over a range of voltages below the onset of full streamer efficiency. The transition is similar to that seen in limited streamer tubes with thick wires. The streamer pulses are preceded in time by a proportional pulse i.e. there is a prepulse. The timing resolutions of these different types of pulses are measured as a function of high voltage and for various gas mixtures of argon, isobutane and freon. The possibility of using a large proportion of freon in order to reduce the streamer charge and improve the rate capability of the RPC is discussed.

Abstract Accelerated ageing tests were performed on four test chambers using high intensity 8 keV X-rays. The effects of varying the following chamber parameters were investigated: strip metal (aluminium, gold), substrate type (Schott S8900, Desag D263) and gas mixture ( Ar DME , Ne DME ). After initial poor ageing results from an MSGC fabricated with aluminium strips on an S8900 substrate, chambers consistently withstood total deposited charge values in excess of 100 mC/cm, with no significant loss of gain.
