This is an analysis of the determinants of psychological depression and coping behaviors of Tennessee farm residents. It seeks to fill the gap in knowledge about depression and its etiology and related mental health behaviors in farm populations. In a sample of 134 farm respondents, demographic, medical, life event, personal, and social resource covariates of depressive symptoms are explored, together with various coping behaviors. Symptoms of depression are measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Comparisons are made to similar analyses completed on 783 rural non-farm Tennesseans. The number of chronic medical problems is found to be the most important predictor of depressive symptoms for the farmers. Differences with respect to the effects of social support, race, and age on distress are noted for the farm and rural non-farm samples.

The development of effective coping strategies may require that adults with HIV disease have an accurate, and to the extent possible, positive perception of their own health status. This has been found to be lacking among HIV-infected people with limited education/information, including many minority adults. The objective of this study was to test several hypotheses that predict depression and perceived health in African-American adults with HIV disease. Data were obtained from 255 HIV-infected black adults (age > 18) who sought support, counseling, and maintenance services from one of three HIV care and referral centers in the Mid-South. The results emphasized that perceived health status may fulfill a psychological distress moderating or distress-aggravating function for persons with HIV/AIDS.

This analysis examined chronic medical problems as a risk factor for depressive symptomatology using longitudinal survey data from a sample of rural Tennesseans. Two waves of data (1977 and 1983) were collected on 532 rural Middle-Tennessee residents. An initial investigation found chronic medical problems a powerful predictor of depression. Furthermore, internal and external resources (personal resources and social support) operated as moderating factors between the stress of medical problems and psychiatric impairment. Panel regression analyses indicated that Time 1 depression level as well as medical problems at Time 2 (t2) were significant predictors of depression at t2 in rural areas of the mid-South. Finally, the buffering effects of both social support and personal resources were explored.

The transfer of new health technology to South Africa is occurring despite the fact that North American and European health care planners and entrepreneurs have a very limited understanding of traditional Black South African cultures which condition the health-related behaviors of the majority of the population. Consequently, relatively few people of African descent in this very diverse nation are, at least initially, benefiting from the new imported medical technology. This study gives an overview of traditional Black medicine in South Africa and, through the presentation of several case studies, discusses its implications for the societal adoption of new health technology received from the United States and other industrialized nations. The example of the successful application of cervical cancer exams in rural and urban clinics of the Eastern Cape is analyzed and institutional mechanisms that support successful transfer are identified.
