Reactivity of high-alumina cement in water: pore-solution and solid phase characterization

Abstract The hydration reaction of high-alumina cement (HAC) at a temperature of 20°C and a water/cement ratio of 0.5 has been studied over a period of one month. The changes of the solid phase were followed by X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis. Besides, pore-solution was expressed by application of high mechanical pressure (500 MPa) during different periods of the reaction in order to study its chemical composition evolution as a result of the hydration process.

A NEW INSIGHT ON ALKALINE HYDROLYSIS OF CALCIUM ALUMINATE CEMENT CONCRETE : PART I. FUNDAMENTALS

In this work a hypothesis to explain the alkaline hydrolysis degradation process of calcium aluminate cement concrete (CACC) is presented. The hypothesis is based on x-ray diffraction (XRD) data of some samples taken from real Spanish CACC structures. The identification from XRD data of a hydrated alkaline aluminate could serve as a guide to differentiate both processes of normal carbonation and alkaline hydrolysis.
