Management of a new influenza A/H1N1 virus pandemic within the hospital: statement of the German Society of Pneumology.

: This update summarized the hospital experience from the first wave of the new influenza A/H1/N1 pandemic.The new influenza A/H1/N1 pandemic seems to have a mild clinical course so far. However, it is difficult to anticipate how the future develop- ment will be. The presented recommendations are intended to answer the following questions: How can we determine the degree of severity in influenza patients and which of them should be hospitalised? How can influenza patients be ma- naged within the hospital and what are the basic hygiene requirements? What are the appropriate diagnostic procedures and how will influenza pa- tients be treated? Finally, what are the common complications of influenza (pneumonia and re- spiratory insufficiency) and howcan they be dealt with?
