The reactions between /sup 197/Au and 166-MeV /sup 16/O, 135-MeV /sup 16/ O, a nd 125-MeV /sup 12/C have been investigated through the measurement of (1) energy and angular distributions of emitted light particles ranging from Li to N. (2) production cross sections of selected radioactive products rangng from /sup 192/Au to /sup 205/Po, and (3) recoil ranges of a few of these radioactive products. From the results, information can be obtained on the probability that the intermediate excited heavy nuclei produced by the transfer of energy and nucleons from the incident projectile to the heavy target deexcite in a manner consistent with statistical equilibration of the excitation energy. The course of the transfer reactions is qualitatively discussed in temns of the semiclassical deflection function for the reacting systems. (auth)
