Landau quantization for a neutral particle in the presence of topological defects

K. Bakke; L. R. Ribeiro; C. Furtado; J. R. Nascimento

In this paper we study the Landau levels in the nonrelativistic dynamics of a neutral particle which possesses a permanent magnetic dipole moment interacting with an external electric field in the curved space-time background with the presence or absence of a torsion field. The eigenfunction and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are obtained. We show that the presence of the topological defect breaks the infinite degeneracy of the Landau levels arising in this system. We also apply a duality transformation to discuss this same quantization for a dynamics of a neutral particle with a permanent electric dipole moment.

Geometric phase for a neutral particle in the presence of a topological defect

K. Bakke; J. R. Nascimento; C. Furtado

In this paper we study the quantum dynamics of a neutral particle in the presence of a topological defect. We investigate the appearance of a geometric phase in the relativistic quantum dynamics of a neutral particle which possesses permanent magnetic and electric dipole moments in the presence of an electromagnetic field in this curved space-time. The nonrelativistic quantum dynamics are investigated using the Foldy-Wouthuysen expansion. The gravitational Aharonov-Casher and He-McKellar-Wilkens effects are investigated for a series of electric and magnetic field configurations.

Four-dimensional aether-like Lorentz-breaking QED revisited and problem of ambiguities

A. P. Baêta Scarpelli; T. Mariz; J. R. Nascimento; A. Yu. Petrov

In this paper, we consider the perturbative generation of the CPT-even aether-like Lorentz-breaking term in the extended Lorentz-breaking QED within different approaches and discuss its ambiguities.

Three-dimensional nonanticommutative superspace

A. F. Ferrari; M. Gomes; J. R. Nascimento; A. Yu. Petrov; A. J. da Silva

We propose two alternative formulations for a three-dimensional nonanticommutative superspace in which some of the fermionic coordinates obey Clifford anticommutation relations. For this superspace, we construct the supersymmetry generators satisfying standard anticommutation relations and the corresponding supercovariant derivatives. We formulate a scalar superfield theory in such a superspace and calculate its propagator. We also suggest a prescription for the introduction of interactions in such theories.

Dispersion relations in noncommutative theories

T. Mariz; J. R. Nascimento; Victor O. Rivelles

We present a detailed study of plane waves in noncommutative abelian gauge theories. The dispersion relation is deformed from its usual form whenever a constant background electromagnetic field is present and is similar to that of an anisotropic medium with no Faraday rotation nor birefringence. When the noncommutativity is induced by the Moyal product we find that for some values of the background magnetic field no plane waves are allowed when time is noncommutative. In the Seiberg-Witten context no restriction is found. We also derive the energy-momentum tensor in the Seiberg-Witten case. We show that the generalized Poynting vector obtained from the energy-momentum tensor, the group velocity and the wave vector all point in different directions. In the absence of a constant electromagnetic background we find that the superposition of plane waves is allowed in the Moyal case if the momenta are parallel or satisfy a sort of quantization condition. We also discuss the relation between the solutions found in the Seiberg-Witten and Moyal cases showing that they are not equivalent.

A remark on Lorentz violation at finite temperature

T. Mariz; J. R. Nascimento; E. Passos; Rubens F. Ribeiro; F. A. Brito

We investigate the radiatively induced Chern-Simons-like term in four-dimensional field theory at finite temperature. The Chern-Simons-like term is temperature dependent and breaks the Lorentz and CPT symmetries. We find that this term remains undetermined although it can be found unambiguously in different regularization schemes at finite temperature

Gödel solution in modified gravity

C. Furtado; T. Mariz; J. R. Nascimento; A. Yu. Petrov; A. F. Santos

We consider the modified gravity whose action represents itself as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action and the gravitational Chern-Simons term and show that the Godel metric solves the modified equations of motion, thus proving that the closed timelike curves whose presence is characteristic for the Godel solution are not forbidden in the case of the Chern-Simons modified gravity as well.

On the superfield effective potential in three dimensions

A. F. Ferrari; M. Gomes; A. C. Lehum; J. R. Nascimento; A. Yu. Petrov; E. O. Silva; A. J. da Silva

We develop the superfield approach to the effective potential in three dimensions and calculate the one-loop and two-loop Kahlerian effective potential in commutative and noncommutative cases.

Ambiguities in the effective action in Lorentz-violating gravity

M. Gomes; T. Mariz; J. R. Nascimento; E. Passos; A. Yu. Petrov; A. J. da Silva

We investigate the occurrence of ambiguities for the Lorentz-violating gravitational Chern-Simons term. It turns out that this term is accompanied by a coefficient depending on an undetermined parameter, due to an arbitrariness in the choice of the conserved current.
