The in vitro antioxidant and cytotoxic activities in different extracts of Baccharis coridifolia DC. (Compositae) were studied using different bioassays. Antioxidant activity was tested using hydroperoxide-initiated chemiluminescence (CL) in rat liver homogenates. The aqueous extract showed antioxidant activity (IC50 = 141 microg/ml), while the dichloromethane and methanol extracts were prooxidant. Activity in the aqueous extract was confirmed by determination of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), showing an IC50 = 556 microg/ml. On the other hand, studies on the cytotoxic activity demonstrated a 78% crown gall tumour inhibition and an ED50 = 4. 2 microg/ml in KB cells growth for the dichloromethane extract. A 56% decrease in the initial absorbance of DNA-Methyl Green complex could also be observed at 1000 microg/ml, suggesting the presence of compounds that interact with DNA.

SummaryTransformed organ cultures of Solanum eleagnifolium Cav. (roots and shoots) were obtained by infection with different Agrobacterium species (A. rhizogenes and A. tumefaciens). The growth index and the solasodine productivity of both kinds of cultures were determinated for several clones. Transformed roots (clone 5) shows a Growth Index of 39.07 and a solasodine yield of 1.90 ± 0.08 mg g-1DW . Solasodine content in clone 5 of transformed roots (1.9 ± 0.08 mg g-1 DW) is similar to those obtained by hormonal manipulation (1.00 – 1.68 mg g-1DW) but higher than those found in shoots and leaves of the wild-grown plant (0.3–0.4 mg g-1DW).

Outbreaks of flaviviruses such as dengue (DV), yellow fever (YFV), Japanese encephalitis (JEV), tick-borne encephalitis (TBEV) and West Nile (WNV) affect numerous countries around the world. The fast spread of these viruses is the result of increases in the human population, rapid urbanisation and globalisation. While vector control is an important preventive measure against vector-borne diseases, it has failed to prevent the spread of these diseases, particularly in developing countries where the implementation of control measures is intermittent. As antiviral drugs against flaviviruses are not yet available, vaccination remains the most important tool for prevention. Although human vaccines for YFV, TBEV and JEV are available, on-going vaccination efforts are insufficient to prevent infection. No vaccines against DENV and WNV are available. Research advances have provided important tools for flavivirus vaccine development, such as the use of plants as a recombinant antigen production platform. This review summarises the research efforts in this area and highlights why a plant system is considered a necessary alternative production platform for high-tech subunit vaccines.

The effect of different concentrations of carbohydrates, nitrogen, sulphate, plant growth regulators and elicitors on growth and thiophene accumulation by transformed root cultures of Tagetes laxa (Cabrera) was studied. The combinations of sucrose (30 g/l), nitrogen (60 mM), sulphate (150 mM) and the ratio Nox:Nred 2:1 are the most appropriate combination to support growth and thiophene accumulation, which was increased by 90% when the cultures were elicited with homogenate of Sclerotinia sclerottiorum. The plant growth regulators used produced dedifferentiation with a decrease in thiophene biosynthesis.
