MEASUREMENT OF ION-ACOUSTIC WAVE VELOCITY IN A PULSED PLASMA

Norman Edwin Abt; Gary Guethlein; J. Warren Stearns

A novel method for measuring the velocity of ion‐acoustic waves is presented. The difference frequency between transmitted and received signals is observed as the transmitted frequency is swept linearly in time. This difference frequency is constant and proportional to the wave velocity. Temperatures inferred from the velocity agree with Langmuir probe measurement made on a hydrogen plasma.

Equilibrium charge-state fractions for 3.3-39 keV deuterium atoms and ions in magnesium vapor

K.H. Berkner; David Leung; Robert V. Pyle; A. S. Schlachter; J. Warren Stearns

Abstract Equilibrium charge-state fractions of 3.3-39 keV deuterium atoms and ions in magnesium vapor are reported. The maximum D − yield is 6.2% at low energies.

Neutral-beam species determination from nuclear reaction products

Lawrence Ruby; J. Warren Stearns; Robert V. Pyle

Abstract Recent measurements designed to measure neutral-beam species by nuclear reaction analysis are reported. The detection system and several experiments intended to improve resolution and reduce noise are described. Results obtained at the LBL neutral-beam engineering test facility are discussed and compared with the predictions of optical Doppler-shift spectroscopy.

EQUILIBRIUM CHARGE-STATE FRACTIONS FOR 2.7 - 31 keV DEUTERIUM ATOMS AND IONS IN STRONTIUM VAPOR

K.H. Berkner; David Leung; Robert V. Pyle; A. S. Schlachter; J. Warren Stearns

Abstract Equilibrium charge-state fractions of 2.7–31 keV deuterium in strontium vapor are reported. The energy dependence of the D - equilibrium yield is discussed. The results are compared with the D - yield in cesium and magnesium vapors.
